I built a free site to browse 1,100+ community dashboards for TRMNL e-ink display

I own a TRMNL (an 800×480 e-ink screen that shows one "recipe" at a time: calendar, weather, transit, quotes, stats…). The community has published over 1,100 of these recipes, but finding good ones was hard, so I built an unofficial site to explore them.

What you can do there, even without owning one:

• browse a gallery of real e-ink screenshots, to see what a 1-bit dashboard actually looks like

• search by need ("bus times", "plants", "habit tracker"…)

• read a small e-ink news feed: DIY panels, dashboard hacks, other e-ink displays

Most of dashboards published on TRMNL are hosted on github and are forkable to be used on any e-ink.

No ads, no cookies, no account needed. I'm not affiliated with TRMNL, just a user.

First capture : a plugin to display plane flying nearby my home.

Second capture : a dashboard to see how my public recipes perform on TRMNL.

Curious what this sub thinks makes a good e-ink layout. Feedback welcome!

New section on TRMNL leaderboard : recipes in the making

Hey everyone!

A new section just went live on the TRMNL Creator Leaderboard, and this one is for everyone building recipes: Recipes in the making.

I kept seeing great screenshots of unfinished/projected recipes on Reddit and here, and a day later they're buried. Now they have a home.

Here's how it works:

Sign in with Discord (no new account needed) and share your project: a screenshot, a short description, and where you're at (idea, building, testing, or submitted to TRMNL).

Post progress updates with new screenshots as you go. Only you can update your own project.

Anyone can read along, and people can leave comments or ask you questions right on your project.

When your recipe finally goes live, the site spots it and moves it to a "Just shipped" spot with an install button.

It's a nice way to get early feedback, find testers, or just show off what you're working on.

It's brand new, so if something feels off or you'd like to see something added, let me know in the comments!

Update of trmnl leaderboard site

Major update to the showcase 🎉

A gallery view. Every public recipe now appears with its actual preview, description, and creator. Features include category filtering, search, sorting by installs or trending status, and a "24 hours / 7 days / 30 days" selector at the top that turns it into a "what's new" feed. Useful even if you've never published anything yourself.

A big shout-out to @hossaink while I'm at it 👋 He shared his experimental plugin explorer the other day—which predates my site—and I borrowed heavily from it for this update: the featured preview, the categories, and the very idea of browsing recipes visually rather than reading a list. His site is now linked in my footer. ExcuseMi's "Trending Recipes" plugin is there too, since that’s what originally inspired this project.

Shareable thumbnails. Open a recipe and click "Share": the site generates a 1200 × 630 image featuring the preview, description, creator's name, and install count. One click to download or share it. Perfect for showing off your recipe.

A "TRMNL News" tab. Live service status, latest announcements, blog posts, and firmware version—all in one place.

The site can also be installed as an app: add it to your home screen, and it opens in full-screen mode, even offline.

https://nbbou81000.github.io/trmnl-leaderboard/?lang=en

As always, let me know what's missing or what isn't working right. Most of this update comes from your suggestions 🙏

Wikipedia tranding articles

Just finished a new one: Top Wikipedia.

It shows yesterday's most-viewed Wikipedia articles, which turns out to be a weirdly good summary of what the world was paying attention to. Today it's a tennis player sitting right above the September 11 attacks.

Two display modes you can switch between in the settings:

• Thumbnail — dithered image of the #1 article next to the ranking, plus a footer with total views and the day's biggest riser

• Trends — drops the image to fit more articles, each with its change vs the previous day and a 7-day bar sparkline

Pick your edition (EN / FR / DE / ES) and every label follows the language, not just the article titles. It fills out properly on TRMNL X too, more rows in landscape and more again in portrait.

Data comes from the official Wikimedia Pageviews API, no key, no scraping. GitHub Actions regenerates everything once a day.

Plugin in review : patent drawings

Nouveau plugin : Geek almanac

Geek Almanac offers two modes. "Ephemeris" displays a tech event that occurred on the current date, with the option to show how old you were at the time. "Encyclopedia" displays a random article from a collection of over 12,000 tech terms, summarized from Wikipedia by an LLM in both French and English. Each article includes an illustration and a QR code linking to the source.

AMBER alert plugin

While trying to create a plugin for the French equivalent of the AMBER Alert system, I realized it wasn't possible for my country, so I decided to build it for the United States instead, as the AMBER system allows for this via an API. It will soon be submitted for review.

New plugin in progress 🚧

**Geek Almanac — WIP TRMNL plugin, looking for feedback**

Two modes in one plugin:

- 🗓️ **Ephemeride** — daily tech/geek history ("this day in tech history"), bilingual EN/FR, rotates through multiple events per day

- 📚 **Encyclopedia** — random deep-dive article on a tech term (programming languages, hardware, internet, gaming, space, security...), new one every refresh

Both modes include a QR code back to the Wikipedia source, and auto-scale across OG/X with the same template.

**The fun part:** it's built to cost **$0/month no matter how popular it gets** — everything's pre-generated (GitHub Actions + free-tier Mistral/Gemini) into static JSON served by GitHub Pages, so TRMNL just polls flat files. No server, no runtime API calls, no bill that scales with installs.

Currently sitting at 291/366 days of ephemeride content (for days without ephemeride, it will show one random encyclopedia article) and 3000+ encyclopedia articles (still growing).

⚠️ **The screenshots below are mockups I had Claude render at TRMNL's real OG/X resolutions to preview the layout — not actual on-device renders yet.** Haven't installed it on TRMNL itself for real-world testing.

Would this be something people here would actually want to use? Open to feedback before I go further.

I built a TRMNL plugin that draws a new random city map every 30 minutes (OpenStreetMap + hand-rendered SVG)

Hey r/eink,

I made a "recipe" (community plugin) for the TRMNL e-ink display called Souvenir Map. Every 30 minutes it picks a random city (from a ~34,000-city dataset) and renders a fresh street map on the fly — real roads, water, parks, railways, a compass rose and scale bar, all drawn as SVG straight from OpenStreetMap/Overpass data. No stock images, every map is generated live.

A few details that might interest e-ink folks specifically:

Everything is vector-rendered SVG, so lines stay crisp at e-ink resolution instead of getting muddy like a rasterized photo would.

Both landscape and portrait variants are generated from the same data, so it adapts to different frame orientations.

The whole pipeline (Node.js script → GitHub Actions → GitHub Pages → the display) runs for free, no server needed on my end.

It's built for TRMNL specifically, but the rendering approach (OSM data → clean SVG for e-ink) could be useful as inspiration if you're doing anything similar on another frame.

TRMNL recipe : https://trmnl.com/recipes/387251

GitHub: https://github.com/nbbou81000/trmnl-carte-souvenir

Little side-project webpage in development : https://nbbou81000.github.io/trmnl-carte-souvenir/atlas.html

Happy to answer questions about the rendering pipeline or the OSM/Overpass side of things.

I also made 2 others recipes for TRMNL, you can have a look on the TRMNL recipe link.

Have a good day !

Ciné Poster is now published! (random TMDB movie posters, filterable by genre/decade/rating

Lien : https://trmnl.com/recipes/393117

Actually in review : Souvenir map

Souvenir Map

ATRMNLplugin that draws a random corner of the world on your e-ink screen — a minimalist map poster, automatically regenerated, revealing a new city each time.

🌍Explore the Atlas— an interactive 3D globe and a 2D map of all the cities drawn by the plugin, with detailed travel statistics.

https://trmnl.com/recipes/387251

GitHub Repository

How it Works

Every 30 minutes, a populated place is randomly selected on Earth. Its road network, rivers, railways, and parks are extracted from OpenStreetMap and rendered as a clean line map, framed like a poster: a double border, a compass rose, a scale, and a discreet marker at the exact coordinates of the drawing.

The drawing doesn’t stop at the frame. It extends and fades gently towards the edges of the map, giving the impression of a fragment of a much larger world rather than a truncated rectangle. Two orientations are generated from the same data — landscape and portrait — and the plugin's markup chooses the one that matches how your device is currently mounted.

IMDB random movie poster - New plugin to come

🎬 Ciné Poster — random movie poster plugin for TRMNL

Pulls a random film poster from TMDB every refresh. You can filter by genre(s) and decade(s) (multi-select), toggle FR/EN, and optionally show a full synopsis, director, top cast, and a QR code linking to the movie's TMDB page.

Built on the usual polling + GitHub Pages pipeline, pool refreshes daily.

⚠️ Not submitted as a Recipe yet — still a private plugin, happy to get feedback before I push it for review!

Unlisted recipe for beta test

Built a plugin that renders a poster-style, minimalist street map of a

random city somewhere in the world, refreshed every hour. Think of those

minimalist "city map" prints people frame as souvenirs — except it's

random, free, and regenerates on its own.

How it works:

- Picks a random city from a dataset of ~34k cities worldwide (population

15k+), with a random offset each time so you never get the exact same

crop twice

- Street/water/rail/park geometry pulled live from OpenStreetMap via

Overpass

- Custom SVG renderer — roads styled by hierarchy (motorways bold,

footpaths barely-there), filled water bodies, hachured parks, double-line

"casing" on major roads, scale bar, compass mark

- Server-side Floyd–Steinberg dithering tuned separately for OG (1-bit) and

X (16-level grayscale)

- City name / country / population shown natively in the title bar (not

baked into the image — kept the SVG text-free so nothing turns to mush

once dithered down to 1-bit)

Currently awaiting review on the marketplace — happy to hear

thoughts on the visual style (line weights, water rendering, whether the

random pick feels varied enough) before/now that it's out. Data: OSM

(ODbL) + GeoNames (CC-BY).
