What drives you to pursue a luxurious lifestyle?
I’ve noticed that many people who grew up in poor households, once they start earning money, immediately buy expensive clothes. Then they renovate their house — and not just renovate it, they turn it into something that looks like a hotel. After that, they buy a car, eat at expensive restaurants every week, and sometimes spend days in luxury hotels.
Nowadays I see the same pattern even in kids. I’d say about 40% of the kids around me carry the latest iPhones, and many eat at restaurants after school, easily spending 300 rupees a day.
I just don’t understand… what’s the point of all this?
You might wonder why I’m asking this question. It’s because I don’t do any of these things. I failed Form 5, I don’t have a good-paying job — not even a minimum-wage one, since foreigners are taking most of the jobs. I’m not into fashion either. Maybe it’s because of my past: my teacher told my parents I was spoiled and advised them not to give me money or buy me anything. Strangely, I ended up getting comfortable with this simple, broke lifestyle.
Even my family looks disappointed in me. They can’t understand why I’m like this. I don’t do drugs, I don’t smoke, I don’t drink. I don’t have a girlfriend or anything like that. And on top of everything, when I was a child, I was raped by a priest who tricked me by promising me a better life(am a guy).
