How can I boost my credit without hurting it first?

I’m 20 and opened a credit card when I turned 18 through my credit union. My limit is pretty low and I never go over 25%. I pay half the bill about 2 weeks before it’s due then fully pay off the balance when it’s due. My issue is my credit has stayed the same for months. I want to boost my credit to get a better car, but I’m nervous to open a new card because I heard it hurts your credit. I have absolutely no debt and I really don’t understand fully why I need to use my credit card. What should I do to boost my credit without hurting it first ?
