Canon R7 vs R8 as an upgrade from a 2000D
Hi everyone,
I've been shooting with a Canon 2000D and the 18–55mm IS II kit lens for about two years, and I'm looking to upgrade. After browsing local used listings and reading reviews, the Canon R7 and Canon R8 have become my main candidates.
I mostly shoot outdoors in daylight. My main subjects are cars, trains (including moving trains), and landscapes, with occasional architecture and street photography. In the future, I'd also like to get into wildlife photography.
Most of my photos have been taken in the 20–35mm range, so the kit lens hasn't really limited me in terms of focal length so far.
What I'm looking for in a new camera is:
- Reliable autofocus
- Fast continuous shooting
- Good ergonomics
- Comfortable enough to carry around for several hours, whether in a city or out in nature
At the moment, I can get either of these used:
- Canon R8 + RF 24–50mm f/4.5–6.3 IS STM for around €1100
- Canon R7 + RF-S 18–45mm f/4.5–6.3 IS STM for a similar price
I plan to buy used equipment, and later I'd like to add a Sigma 18–50mm f/2.8 DC DN RF.
My main question is: Which of these cameras would you choose considering my use cases and my long-term goal of getting into wildlife photography? Would the APS-C R7 make more sense, or is the full-frame R8 the better choice?
I'd also appreciate any advice on what to check when buying a used camera and lens (shutter count, sensor condition, mount wear, service history, etc.).
TL;DR: Looking for a used mirrorless camera around €1100 with a basic lens that can handle cars, trains, landscapes, and eventually wildlife photography. I'd like it to last at least 5 years without feeling the need to upgrade. R7 or R8?
