For a while, I got to experience peace living with my husband without my SS around, and now I don’t want to go back

I just need to vent because this is one of the few places where I actually feel comfortable talking about this.
I’ve been a stepmom to my SS for a while, and it was slowly consuming me. I love my husband more than anything, but because of work we hadn’t been able to move in together yet.

Every week I had to deal with seeing my SS’s mother and her family. They were disrespectful, caused unnecessary drama, and I didn’t even realize how much it was affecting my mental health until I was finally out of that situation.
A few months ago, my husband and I finally moved in together for the first time. Coincidentally, his ex got jealous that we were living together and refused to let our SS stay at our house anymore. We’ve been living like that for months now.

Honestly… I’ve never been happier.

I almost feel guilty admitting that, but it’s the truth.
I no longer have to spend time around people I dislike, which has been incredibly freeing. I don’t have to pretend I enjoy tantrums or that I love spending my days off taking care of a child who isn’t mine. For the first time, my husband started putting me first, and it felt amazing. I finally felt like I had the place in his life that I’d always wanted.

Now the court process has moved forward, and we’ll be getting my SS back for visitation. But this time it’s going to be different—he’ll be in our home.
I hadn’t really thought about how much harder that’s going to be.
Before, I still had my own place. When I got overwhelmed, I could just go home and decompress. But now my home is our home. My little safe space, the place where I finally felt free and at peace, is about to become the place where all of that starts again.
I know this probably makes me sound like a terrible person, but I just needed to get it off my chest.

I’d also really like to know how those of you with stepkids manage to stay sane and still carve out time for yourselves while living with your SK. I feel like therapy might be a good idea for me, honestly.

I don’t like sharing a bed with my stepson.

I don’t like sharing a bed with my stepson.

When I first started dating my DH (M25), I already made it clear that I can’t sleep like that, and at first he understood without complaining. But lately he’s been making an issue out of it and saying I’m just being difficult about his son.

Usually, when I’m lying down and he comes into the bedroom with SS to sleep with us, I simply get up and sleep somewhere else. I don’t say anything rude, I don’t make faces, I just remove myself because I genuinely don’t like it, and this is one thing I won’t compromise on.

I don’t think I’m being unreasonable. I just don’t like sharing a small bed that barely fits the two of us already, especially since DH moves around all night and constantly asks for space, and then adding a child who also moves around a lot. There’s simply no room for me.

Besides that, to me the bed is something for the couple. SS sleeps perfectly fine in his crib, even with grandma nearby. DH is the one who insists on sleeping with him.

I don’t know how to solve this because DH keeps saying I do this out of spite, and that’s really not true. Do you think im wrong?

Hey everyone,

I’ve been a stepmom for about 6 months now and I still feel uncomfortable in some situations. For context, BM has made it pretty clear she still has feelings for my SO.

Whenever she comes by to drop off the kid and I’m not there, I tend to overthink and feel insecure. I know it’s not ideal, but I think it’s somewhat normal, especially given the situation.

The issue is that I don’t feel like my SO really understands where I’m coming from. Because of that, I usually just keep my feelings to myself and try to deal with them quietly. I’m not pretending to be happy if I’m not, but I’m also not trying to create conflict.

Even so, this seems to bother him a lot. He says I’m being immature, which honestly makes me feel worse. I’m already trying to manage things on my own since I can’t afford therapy right now (though I plan to when I can).

Lately I’ve been feeling really sad and questioning the relationship, mainly because I don’t feel supported or understood. It’s hard to open up when I feel like my emotions won’t be received well.

I even told him that I don’t feel comfortable sharing my feelings if I expect a negative reaction, and that just made things more tense between us.

I know I’m not handling everything perfectly, but I am trying to process things in a calm and respectful way. It just feels like that’s still not enough.
