The Book of Mormon is Preserved
Among the major Abrahamic religions that claim revelation through Prophets, Mormonism occupies a unique position. The revelation of the Book of Mormon was confirmed and published in 1830, during the lifetime of Prophet Joseph Smith. As a result, there is no doubt about what text Prophet Joseph Smith intended to present as scripture.
By contrast, the foundational scriptures of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam are separated from their prophetic figures by more complex textual histories. Moses did not leave us a manuscript we can verify as his own, and the Torah was put together after his lifetime. Jesus wrote no known book, and the Gospel was compiled after his lifetime. Muhammad did not leave us a manuscript we can verify as his own, and the Quran text comes years later through a process of collection, transmission, and standardization by Political leader Uthman.
This does not prove that the Book of Mormon is true or that any other Abrahamic religion is false. Preservation and truth are not the same thing. However, it does mean that we can objectively examine the Book of Mormon as the scripture Prophet Joseph Smith confirmed and revealed. In the other Abrahamic religions, debates about textual transmission, authorship, and later editing make it literally impossible to determine whether the surviving text precisely reflects the original prophetic revelation.
Therefore, even if one remains skeptical, the Book of Mormon still possesses a significant epistemic advantage: we know with certainty what its founding Prophet claimed the revelation from God to be. We have textual certainty without having to play the guessing game of what was revealed. Meaning critics and believers alike can evaluate the actual text revealed, rather than first having to painstakingly reconstruct what the original revelation might have been.
