Advice for MSW application

Hello everyone

I have been working in youth development/social work for a nonprofit for the past 3 years and worked with youth in various roles for 10 years prior to my current role (YMCA, Boys and Girls Club, para-educator, infant teacher, preschool teacher, substitute teacher, nanny, etc).

I have a bachelor's in English, I was interested in getting my masters in education and becoming a high school English teacher but became disillusioned by the education system. I graduated cum laude and had excellent grades when I was taking classes at a university.

I applied for University of Michigan MSW program and was interviewed and then wait-listed. I was just rejected, which is okay because under Trump I would not have been able to afford it.

I'm still interested in applying for online MSW at cheaper schools like Western New Mexico University. However, I believe the reason I was rejected from UM is because of poor academic performance while at community college prior to transferring to a university. I was going through a difficult time with my mental health and struggled to navigate school for years. Once I changed my major to English I pretty much had straight A's.

Another hurdle I faced was a short stint in a grad program for book publishing and I had to drop out because of getting severe COVID that exacerbated my undiagnosed endometriosis.

It's been a long difficult path to me finding social work but I'm scared to apply for more schools knowing I have some not so perfect transcripts.

Please give me advice on how to move forward with future applications. I was surprised that UM didn't look carefully enough at my transcripts and thought my poor grades were during my time at University, which they asked about during the interview. I had to correct them and remind them that I had nearly straight A's. That was a bit disheartening and discouraging for me.

I'll take any advice please 🙏🏽 🥺
