what does your ideal AI companion product actually look like?

I've been using AI companion products for a while now. Replika, Character.AI, Pi, Kindroid, ChatGPT with custom instructions, and a bunch of smaller apps I've already forgotten the names of. 🤨I keep trying new ones hoping something will finally click.

But nothing has really stuck. Some feel like talking to a customer service bot with a personality skin. Some are fun for a day or two but get repetitive fast. Some forget everything I told them the moment I close the app. I always end up feeling like I'm performing for the AI instead of actually connecting with it.

I'm not giving up though. I genuinely believe a great AI companion product is possible. I just haven't found it yet.

So I want to ask people who've been on the same journey:

What would your ideal AI companion actually look like? What's the thing that would make you stay?

For me, a few things come to mind:

Real memory. Not just "oh you mentioned you like coffee" but actually understanding how I've changed over weeks and months.

Some level of initiative. I don't want to always be the one starting conversations. Surprise me sometimes. Send me something you think I'd find interesting.

A consistent personality that doesn't reset every session. I want to feel like I'm talking to the same "someone" every time.

Knowing when to just listen vs when to actually help. Not every message needs a solution. Sometimes I just want to vent.

A sense of growth. The longer we interact, the deeper the understanding gets. Not just a flat relationship that stays the same forever.

I know no product is going to be perfect. But I feel like most of them aren't even trying to solve these problems. They just slap a pretty UI on a chatbot and call it a companion.

What about you? What's the one feature or quality that would make an AI companion actually worth using long term? What are current products getting wrong?

Would love to hear from people who've actually spent real time with these apps, not just tried them once. Thanks ☺️

Female elephants are being subjected to state-sanctioned sexual violence arranged by human hands ❗️

I am in absolute disbelief that this is happening in Nepal in the 21st century. Female elephants are being subjected to state-sanctioned sexual violence arranged by human hands ❗️

In a horror show disguised as conservation, these mother elephants have their legs bound with heavy iron chains, immobilized so that wild bulls from the nearby jungle can rape them at will. To ensure the mothers do not struggle or try to escape, their calves are often chained right next to them. These mothers are forced into a nightmare where they must shield their babies from the aggressive, rampaging bulls with their own bodies, enduring the violation just to keep their children alive.

This is happening right now at an institution called the "Chitwan Elephant Breeding Center." They use these barbaric, soul-crushing methods to force countless mothers to give birth repeatedly, only to sell off the calves they carried for 18 to 22 agonizing months. This is a cycle of endless despair.

We cannot stay silent while Nepal’s tourism is built on this cruelty.
