Heyo - new player and trying to figure out my options here. I've got a brook running right by my fortress and I'm wondering what I should be doing with it?

Digging into it presumably will flood the base, but is there a way to use it for a well? I've seen some people seem to have bridges across them, how have they managed that?

Any water management (or general tips!) very welcome!
