Advice on seeking a second opinion abroad
Hello.
My 13 year old dog (very small mixed breed) has periodontal disease and mitral valve disease. Quality of life is still very good and there's been no signs of severe symptoms, but obviously there is occasional discomfort.
The problem is that I took her to a vet here in Sweden where I was essentially forced to do treatment when I was hoping to discuss geriatric care. The authorities are now pressuring me to treat my dog as apparently this vet reported me for refusing treatment.
Multiple vets are saying that there are no clinical findings except for the gum disease and heart issue. And they state that anesthesia risk is non-trivial. Despite this I'm still being pressured.
I can't stress enough that she is doing well. She eats normally, barks, we go out for walks multiple hours a day. Yes, dogs mask pain quite well but if quality of life was seriously compromised then it would show one way or another.
It's very difficult to find someone willing to suggest a more palliative-oriented treatment route here in Sweden. So my question is if there are veterinarians abroad who are more willing to suggest a less invasive care option as a second opinion? I hear Germany is a common destination for second opinions and it's close enough to where I live to be worth considering.
