Fantasy novel about two brothers, the younger brother keeps saving the older brother making him seem incapable

Apologies for the lack of detail. I read this book maybe two decades ago.

The only thing I can remember is it POVs from the younger brothers perspective. His older brother is in line for a throne or chieftain position. The younger brother keeps saving or proving better than the older brother by accident showing him to be incapable and creating resentment.

One of the major scenes I remember is some giant beast of some sort attacks the party. The younger brother saves the older brother with only a knife. The older brother is embarrassed and does something like betrays him because of it.

I know it's vague but it has been bugging me for years. Thank you to anyone who replies.

Coming of age movie

A movie about a boy, his brother and mother. They have fell on hard times and are making their way across America to support the elder brothers dream of becoming an actor.

I don't remember much of the movie but I do remember that in the end the director of a movie sees the younger brother rehearsing lines with the elder brother and he gets the main part. The older brother ends up working in the costume department.

I don't know when the movie was released, I watched it maybe a decade ago.
