The reality of long chapters.

The reality of long chapters.

Now hear me out: Recently Novel Length Chapters have exploded in length, and thats a good thing. But i dont think anyone assumes this is even remotely economical. For multiple reasons.

Really long chapters are bound to contain considerable amounts of filler. I personally have to delete a lot of content from any chapter above 5000 words in length, simply because it drifts too much.

Chapters of this length take up a lot of tokens, and chances are they get so much wrong that they need to be rewritten multiple times, meaning even more tokens are going down the drain.

My proposition: Add more chapter length options. Keep Novel Length at the intended 3500 mark for 10 quills. Add an option for 15 quills which aims for 4500-5000 words in length. Then add an option for 20 quills aiming for the extremely long chapters with 6500+ words.

I know people want to keep these extremely long chapters for 10 quills, but this simply will not happen. Its unrealistic. So the best we can hope for is more choices and options for those who want it, instead of overcorrecting the generation lengths, resulting in another wave of fallout due to short novel length chapters.

For me, right now, Novella is too short, and Novel is too fucking long most of the time. But that doesnt mean i want to lose the option for such insanely long chapters.

The New Model is fucked.

Here's what most everyone is experiencing:

Chapter generation requires multiple attempts. I personally had this lovely "retry for free" button appear nearly 20 times for a single chapter.

When the chapter actually generates, there's a 50% chance the chapter just gets deleted on its own and our lovely lad "retry again" makes a visit.

In the off-chance that a chapter generates and does not get thrown into the shadowrealm, we have to fight tooth and nail in order to breach the 3000 words mark for Novel length.

Now, lets assume all this worked. You've got a chapter which somehow managed to reach 4000 words. What now?

Well, for one, your chapter will most certainly have randomly re-arranged the order of events given in the prompt. It will have names of characters re-written and continuity will have been more of an ominous rumor than a guarantee. Chances are you will also have half a dozen random characters appear in your lorebook. None of these characters will be in the chapter.

And then we also have the almost guaranteed factor of half your prompt having been thrown into the aether and simply not having been considered during generation.

But what if for some miraculous reason all of the above was not your fate to be? Well, the generated text is simply bad. Dialogue is plain inferior to what we had months ago, and absolutely beyond abysmal to what we had for two days ago. Also, random Chinese or Arabic words because apparently this new model is now ChatGPT?

Lads, devs, this is bad. I burned 200 quills just getting a single non-NSFW chapter to generate with somewhat tolerable depth and adherence to the very detailed prompt provided.

Whatever you had 2 days ago, just revert to it. The minor issues caused by that model were unreasonably more preferable to the absolute clusterfuck of whats currently happening.

Right now it is vastly more reliable and somehow cheaper to just start a blank chapter and write it through inserts. Had i done that i wouldnt have burned nearly half of those quills for single god damn chapter.

EDIT: I tried out to dabble around a bit more with the current state of the model, and i think i can speak for quite a few people when i say this is not it. If this - especially the generation quality - is the state its going to remain in, i cannot justify the pricetag.

The Quills Situation.

Since there's a major issue currently going on with Quills being eaten up relentlessly through the "Sensitive Information"-bug, and the all too ever present "No Daily Streak Payout"-bug, i think it'd be appropriate to hear whether the devs are going hand out a paltry sum of quills after these bugs are properly addressed and fixed.

Gods know i've lost hundreds of quills to not receiving the daily streak payout. In fact, the weekly and monthly streaks too do not reliably register.

Campaignman, whats the read on the streak payout bugs? These are unreasonably frustrating because it actively denies serotonin.
