Core Aerating Best Practices

Looking for some advice that I haven’t found on any of the guides. I’m in western Washington outside Seattle (Zone 9a) and while I haven’t had the budget to do a full overseed, I’m planning to core aerate this fall and ideally next spring and spread humichar. My soil is fairly compact and I think it’s a small step I can go in the right direction (hoping to do full overseed next fall). I plan to rent a gas powered aerator for this. My questions are as follows:

  1. does timing of the aeration matter? Or weather?
  2. optimal depth to set the tines on the aerator?
  3. are multiple passes desired or just one?
  4. is there a recommended height of cut for the lawn? Currently I’m mowing at 4”

Appreciate the help!!

Cloudberry?

This plant is growing in my front yard in western Washington (outside Seattle) and has recently grown these berries. AI says cloudberry?

What are these darker spots?

Noticed these spots that are noticeably darker and growing much faster than the grass surrounding it. In western Washington just outside Seattle zone 9a

Another ID Request

Is the tall grass that has gone to seed quack grass? I believe that there is some fine fescue mixed in with the bunch that I pulled.

It seems to me like it’s got a spike seed head and rhizomes but I’m not very confident in identifying any other features of grasses.

This subreddit has been super helpful for me as I’ve become a new homeowner so thank you all!!

Background: Zone 8b outside of Seattle. I bought this house last year and the lawn is an absolute mess of various grasses and weeds. Went on vacation for two weeks and the lawn blew up. Trying to use this opportunity with seed heads to identify which grasses that I have.
