On May 1, 1955, Dale L. Harpham was appointed Assistant Director of the the United States Marine Band, a position he held until April 18, 1972, when he was appointed the 23rd Director of the Band.
Harpham served as a musical adviser at the White House and conducted the Marine Band at numerous events held at the White House and the U.S. Department of State. These included the inauguration of former President Richard Nixon, a special performance tour in Yugoslavia at the request of the President, and performances at President Nixon’s residence in San Clemente.
Renowned conductor Leopold Stokowski once commented:
“You have trained an excellent orchestra, and I know how much effort and dedication that requires. Your performance that evening was vibrant and full of passion something truly rare at the time.”
