Setting up a brand-new DIRIGERA hub in 2026 was a 4-hour aggravation [SOLVED]

Posting because the official troubleshooting is useless and the actual fix took digging through old Reddit threads. Hope it helps some one else.

Symptom: Unbox the hub, plug it in, follow the IKEA Home smart app's setup. Hub resets fine, enters pairing mode (breathing light), app finds it — then immediately pops up "Let's try a factory reset. Your hub didn't start downloading the latest software." Mine did this 5–6 times.

The hub ships with firmware 2.556.3. The current IKEA Home smart app refuses to complete onboarding until the hub updates during setup, and the hub on 2.556.3 doesn't pull that update through the new flow. 2.556.3 also has no Matter-over-Thread support at all, so any Matter device you bought alongside the hub is useless until you get past this.

My router is a MikroTik RB962UiGS running RouterOS 7.22.2. Mentioning it in case it matters — some people in the linked threads suspect certain routers/configs trigger the issue more than others.

What worked:

  1. Uninstall the current IKEA Home smart app
  2. Sideload 1.18.3 from APKMirror
  3. Run setup with the old app — pairing completes
  4. Old app forces you to update to the current version
  5. Hub still doesn't see a firmware update available
  6. Reboot the hub, reboot the router, force-quit and reopen the app — eventually the update kicks in

Things I changed on the router along the way (not sure if any of these mattered, but listing them in case they did):

  • Disabled IPv6 (it was already off router-side, but mentioned because the threads below point at IPv6 as a possible culprit on 2.556.3 — I have no way to confirm whether this helped)
  • Disabled the local NTP server I had running on the MikroTik. Possibly unusual setup, but if you also run one, worth trying — the hub may not like getting NTP from the same box it's also routing through

Skip these, they don't help:

  • Multiple factory resets
  • Different cables / ports
  • Checking firewall / DNS
  • Sniffing traffic to confirm the hub reaches the internet (it does and I did have ping to it from my phone)

Shipping new retail units with firmware that can't complete onboarding is bad. The error message tells you to factory reset, which doesn't help because the firmware is the issue. No documented downgrade path, no manual flash, no in-app force-update. Sideloading an old APK shouldn't be the answer for a brand-new product.

Hope this saves someone else 4 hours.

Other threads on the same problem I used while trying to solve this.

Apologies for the LLM-assisted writeup — was too fried after 4 hours of this to put coherent sentences together myself. Content and findings are mine, prose is Claude's.
