Hi, I read all the rules but still am unsure if this is the right sub, please point me to a better one if this isn’t appropriate here. Basically what the title says. My (25F) BIL (27) has lived his whole life in his father’s house and hasn’t done much besides work his part time job and play video games. Aside from family dinner, he spent most of the time in his room. Lately, he started medication, which seemed to help his depression and he got a “new lease on life” or whatever the saying is.
His cost of living was essentially $0 by relying on his father for most things. Due to this, he had quite a lot of money saved from his part time job. Well, he went on kind of a spending spree- new outfits, appliances, technology, etc. This included a brand new phone with a plan separate from his father’s.
Then he decided he wanted to move to California and start anew. This worried me and his family and we tried to reason with him to just go for a visit, see if he likes it and to try and line up a job and place to live before he just up and moves there. He wasn’t having any of it, claiming he has “plenty of money saved”.
Well he ended up going there with 8 suitcases full of his belongings (thankfully we convinced him to leave his cats). And very shortly after he was there- he started requesting money from family. Then he texted me at 3:30am California time a simple location pin on Google Maps. I didn’t see this until I woke up and I responded by asking what it was. There were no other texts from him with context. And that’s the last thing I heard from him.
I have texted every day and tried to call but I think his phone plan has been shut off due to him not having any money to pay. We have filed a missing persons report already and he hasn’t been found yet.
I wrack my brain day in and day out about what I could have done to help him and avoid this. I’m so worried for him. How do I cope? I feel so powerless. Has anyone had similar happen to them?
