Apparently being impressed by your partner buying property is controversial 😭

a couple of weeks ago I posted about my girlfriend independently buying a property and it sparked a lot more discussion than I expected. I’m genuinely not frustrated with her at all -if anything, I’m really proud of how she approached the whole process. She did everything herself: research, comparisons, running numbers, reaching out directly, making decisions without relying fully on an agent.

After that post I actually spoke to a real estate contact of mine and walked him through what she did. His reaction was pretty straightforward - he said it was a very solid, structured approach and honestly not something most buyers take the time to do. His main point was that a lot of people do prefer to rely on agents or intermediaries simply because it’s easier and less mentally demanding, which is exactly why that role exists in the first place. At the same time, there are also people who prefer to be fully in control of every step and really understand what they’re doing, especially when it comes to something as important as a potential investment or income source

I guess in the end it just comes down to personal choice: how much you want to be involved vs how much you’re comfortable delegating to someone you’re paying to handle it

anyway, just wanted to clarify the tone: I was just reflecting on how different approaches can be

P.S. appreciate all the perspectives in the comments, it was actually interesting to read through, lol

hey, so this has been on my mind for a bit. I’m early 30s, have some savings, been thinking about buying property somewhere in europe, mostly portugal/spain, nothing super fancy, just something that makes sense long term. but here’s the thing, my gf literally did it all on her own and it’s kind of annoying how well it worked out for her. she didn’t want to pay agent fees, didn’t trust anyone, so she just forced herself to figure everything out. like full deep dive, chatgpt, reddit, random forums, and people here actually suggested her a few tools/websites to compare cities, yields, taxes and stuff, and apparently that helped her a lot to narrow things down. she spent time on it, not gonna lie, but in the end she found a really good deal and just went for it. and now she’s super calm about it, like it was obvious. and I’m here still in that “yeah I should probably start properly” phase.

I ask her things and she explains, but I still feel like I don’t even know where to begin without getting lost in all this info. at the same time I keep thinking I could maybe find something even better if I actually put in the effort, but I’m also not sure I have the patience she had. so now I’m stuck between going the easy route with an agent or trying to do it myself like she did, save on fees and actually understand what I’m doing. has anyone here done it fully diy like that? did it actually pay off or is it one of those things that only works if you go all in? just trying to figure out if I should push myself or stop overthinking and keep it simple.

p.s. would it actually be useful if I asked her to write a post here about how she did it, or not really?
