Unpopular opinion: "AI cleanup" dictation apps on Mac are solving the wrong problem

Hot take, going to get pushback. Here goes.

I work on SpeakUp (Mac dictation, €29 once, on-device). So obviously biased. Most paid dictation apps now follow the same recipe — transcribe with Whisper, run an LLM "cleanup" pass that smooths filler words and tightens phrasing, charge $10-15/month. Wispr Flow, Superwhisper Pro, Spokenly, Dictura. All variants of this.

The thing is, AI cleanup is a downstream fix for an upstream problem. The actual pain isn't filler words. It's domain vocabulary. Doctors lose "Thrombozytenaggregationshemmer." Devs see "Hetzner" come out as "head sner" and "Pydantic" as "pie dentic." Lawyers retype case names. Cleanup doesn't help any of these — the wrong word is already in the transcription before the LLM sees it.

We took the other bet with SpeakUp. Lexicons that teach Whisper specific field vocab BEFORE transcription. 180,000 medical terms in German (ICD-10-GM + OPS). Italian medical. About 1,000 dev terms (Claude Code, Pydantic, Hetzner, Supabase, K8s, frameworks, cloud providers, the usual alphabet soup).

Result: about 15 more medical terms right per 100 dictated. About 4 more dev terms. Free, opt-in, on-device. No subscription. No cloud. No "AI" smoothing your words.

Anyone paying for an AI cleanup app — what's it actually cleaning up that the right vocabulary wouldn't have prevented?
