“Why is Vande Mataram’s full version controversial ? There are several reasons.🙂

I’ve seen many discussions about the use of the full version of Vande Mataram in official ceremonies, especially oath-taking events. It is important to understand the facts clearly.

Vande Mataram, written by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay, is a respected patriotic song of India. However, the Government of India has officially accepted only the first two verses as the National Song. These verses focus on the beauty, nature, and greatness of the motherland and are non-religious in nature.

The controversy arises from the later verses of the full version. In these lines, the nation is described using imagery of Hindu goddesses such as Durga, Lakshmi, and Saraswati, which gives the song a religious tone. For example:

“Tvam hi Durga dashapraharana dharini”

(You are Durga, the wielder of weapons)

“Kamala kamaladala viharini”

(You are Lakshmi, who resides in the lotus)

“Vani vidyadayini”

(You are Saraswati, the giver of knowledge)

Because these lines refer to Hindu deities, the song shifts from a purely patriotic expression to one that can be interpreted as religious. While many people see this as a symbol of strength, devotion, and cultural expression, others feel uncomfortable because it presents the nation in a form of divine worship.

In a diverse and secular country like India, not everyone follows or accepts such representations. Because of this, using the full version in official government ceremonies can create concerns about inclusiveness and neutrality. That is why only the first two verses are officially recognized and widely used.

This issue is not about disrespecting the song or the nation. It is about maintaining unity, respecting all beliefs, and following established national practice.

Understanding both perspectives is important before forming an opinion.
