How can i always know where am i on a scale so i can improvise on it

So I’ve been playing guitar for like a year, and recently I got kinda bored of just strumming chords. I want to add little riffs between the chords like I’ve seen other people do. I’ve also seen people make like a chord solo where the chords sound really melodic together. I really want to be able to do that and improvise it like they do.

But I was thinking that maybe my main problem is not being that good with scales. I know the shapes, but I can’t really play them at a regular speed while improvising. Usually I just go by feel, but I end up hitting a wrong note that’s not in the scale and it sounds bad, or I hit a note that is in the scale but still sounds bad with the chord.

I don’t really know how I can play faster and know where I am on the scale and where the other notes are without having to stop and think about it, so I can improvise more naturally.
