Are the Clock Keepers REALLY Akane's "second familly" ?
One thing i enjoy the most in the TBHK community are the discussion of themes of morality, that are often centered around a few major moraly grey divisive characters, like Hanako, Teru and Tsukasa, mainly. But recently while making a video about them, i thought ... What about the Clock Keepers tho ? Because here's the thing.
Everywhere i go i keep hearing about how people see the Clock Keepers as being this wholesome cast of characters, and especially from the point of view of Akane. Which is, i believe, mainly due to how much of a chill relationship Akane seems to have with them, and particulary in content outside the main manga plotline (like in extra chapters one shots, official arts and so on), but also how they interact within the confines of the story.
A LOT of people out there seem to "kinship" (if i use that term correctly) Akane with Mirai and Kako, like if they were some kinda of found or second familly for him. And i see this so much that it kinda makes me feel like this is a shared sentiment in the community. While i believe wholeheartedly that it coudn't be farther from the truth.
I'm pretty certain Akane secretly HATES both of them. And he has every reason to (expect for one but i'll talk about it later). Did we forget that Akane became a Clock Keeper because he was forced by Kako and Mirai to do so ? Not only did they make a 11 years old Akane make a brutal choice between either watch Aoi die or pretty much sell his soul to an evil ghost when he didn't even know such things existed, but they also CAUSED the incident, while trying to actively KILL Aoi.
Like, i think it is kinda weird that some of us try to see the Clock Keepers as Akane's surrogate family, because we know how evil they are. We know that Mirai, while she might seem cute, is only a souless robot which mischief actually killed Yashiro before Kako reversed it. And we know how distant and manipulative Kako is.
I think it's a bit odd to try to argue the cyber-ghost that enslaved Akane at 11 yo, changing his life forever, arguably for the worst, and who tried to kill his lover, while also telling him that if he does not obey them with their plan to litteraly change then entire world to a New Timeline where -added to other things- his lifetime lover that he actually manage to conquer, is now bethrothed to his best friend they would just throw him out of the window, and find somehow we can do the job, is actually caring and emotionally important to him.
Now, i don't think Akane himself was ever mentionned to have been or became aware that it is Kako and Mirai who actually orchastred all of this. Surely tho, now he must know, right ? He has seen how Mirai and Kako operates. When Mirai goes on a rampage in the school, making windows explode like when Aoi almost died.
Would he even remember that ? I think, but i'm not sure. Anyway, i'm fairly certain he implied that this happens a lot. My reasoning is that, for me, Akane just act the part when he's around them, bidding his time. After all, he HATES Hanako for being a murder. And we saw that he has been to Kako's Innermost Boundary, so he probably knows about how Kako puts the souls of people who tried to mess with time in dolls FOREVER. Is THAT any different, or even worst than killing a human ?
I have a strong feeling that Akane just do what he's told -untill he finally go against Kako in the lastest chapters- but do not trust Kako a single bit. I mean, if he did, why didn't he NEVER called him or relied on him to turn back time when Aoi was in danger, for exemple ? Again, if the Severance was such a problem to him, why didn't he ask Kako to reverse it after Aoi got trapped there ? They could have gone to his bounary. Probably because he knew he either didn't care, or woudn't do something to help him even if that mattered to him. In context, Kako would likely have preferred Aoi's sacrifice. For me, he already knows about the plot.
Partly because it's very unlikely Kako and Mirai will survive this current ARC has Clock Keepers, as their Yorishiro will most likely get destroyed at the end of it. And if you know some of my theories and predictions, you already know i believe Akane will be the one to betray and destroy both Kako and Mirai after Yashiro comes back from the Past, and him from the New Present Timeline.
He's the only one than can physicly do it (Mirai is out of the question, Yashiro can't allow herself to destroy one anymore, etc). He's the character that would add the most emotional weight to the moment. And again, he has all the reasons in the world to want to take revenge upon Kako, AND nobody will know better than he and Yashiro how dangerous their power is, and how safer the entire world would be if Akane took their place forcefully in order to be the only one to control time instead.
I don't know, maybe it's a hot take ! I don't want to stop people to have fun with this trio, or act as the fun police, but i still find it morally questionnable to try to see thoses characters has been very close, while Akane is a victim of them (mainly Kako) in every single way imaginable. Again, in the New Present Timeline, Kako let him die against the Entity, and when Yashiro told me, he didn't seem to care more than 1s.
So yeah, do tell me your thoughts about this down below ! Maybe i'm alone on this :)
