Samoa has dominated the Pacific Nations Cup in Suva, Fiji, bringing home an impressive 19 medals, 12 gold and 7 silver, in a commanding performance across both elite and youth divisions.

The result builds on last month’s Youth World Cup success in Thailand, where Samoa also secured gold and silver, further highlighting the rapid rise of Independent Boxing Samoa (IBS) on the international stage.

Led by Lemisio and head trainer, boxing legend Faumuina To’aletai David Tua, the team’s success reflects weeks of intense preparation, combining high-level training with a strong spiritual foundation. Their efforts were backed by a dedicated coaching and management group working behind the scenes.

“We could only send a small team… but we hope to one day field a full team covering all weight classes and genders for all world events,” Lemisio said. “With the help of the government and local businesses, and faith in God, we are working towards giving our athletes the opportunities they work so hard for.”

Participating countries:

Samoa

Fiji

Papua New Guinea

Australia

New Zealand

Tuvalu

Nauru

Origin of the Legendary Gana/Ngana Clan Of Samoa & Tonga

The first Malietoa was Savea his son Ganasavea married the daughter of Tui Tonga.

Malietoa Ganasavea & the daughter of Tui Tonga had 6 sons and these half Samoan/Tongan sons became known as the Sa Gana or Ha’a Ngana meaning the Gana/Ngana Clan.

Gana/Ngana is just the shortened version of their fathers name (Gana)Savea.

These sons also established the Fale Ono O Le Ati Gana (The 6 Houses Of The Gana/Ngana Clan in Samoa). Each son was sent out to rule as Chiefs in different parts of Samoa & Tonga.

Tonga

* One of the sons became Tui Tonga and was known in Tonga as Tatafueikimeimua the 20th Tui Tonga.

* The other son became known in Tonga as NganaTatafu and became the 1st Tui Ha’aNgana in Ha’ano Ha’apai.

* Another son was known in Tonga as NganaEiki he became the 1st Malupo in Uiha Ha’apai.

Samoans being buried in the Royal Tombs of Tonga is interesting for the simple fact these tombs were reserved strictly for the Tui Tonga line. The majority of Tongans themselves were not allowed to be buried in these tombs. Makes me wonder how many more Samoans are buried in these Chiefly Tombs of the Tui Tonga line.

Notice the Samoan word Olotele this was the name of the residence of the Tui Tonga.

Talakaifaiki was the cruel half Samoan/Tongan King that was defeated and expelled from Samoa by the ancestors of the Malietoa line. I’m wondering if the Samoans that were buried in Lapaha helped Talakaifaiki escape alive while being chased out of Samoa or were they just his Samoan Chiefly relatives who lived in Tonga? 🧐

The History between Samoa & Tonga is deeper than many think or know and are also the most related and most identical in all Polynesia.

Origin Of The Name ie Toga

Long story short an ie Samoa was taken to Tonga and as years passed a marriage took place between Samoan Elite & Tongan Elite. A Samoan Chief married the daughter of Tui Tonga in which the Tongan Royals brought the same ie Samoa and presented it as a wedding gift to Samoan Royals. It is from this special occasion and journey of the ie Samoa to Tonga and back that the name ie toga originates. From that day forward Samoan fine mats (ie Samoa) were then called ie toga to commemorate the special occasion & gift as well as the journey of the ie Samoa to Tonga and back.

Tonga

In Tonga the Kie Ha’amoa (Samoan Fine Mats) also known as Kie Hingoa (Named Mats) are Royal Mats in other words these Samoan Named Mats are the most important and powerful objects in Tonga. They are heirlooms passed from generation to generation as treasures, to'onga such as vala to'onga or kofu to'onga, and are worn or presented during weddings, funerals, investitures, and commemorative events by members of the Tongan monarchy and aristocracy who trace their ancestry back to Samoa.

The Kie Ha’amoa/Kie Hingoa are still worn and used on the most important ritual occasions illustrates that the ancestors, whose essence is contained therein, are living presences in a very real way and that their ancestral mana makes them tapu to ordinary people. Some of them circulate, while others have the status of Crown Jewels for example:

The ie Samoa (Maneafaiga’a) was taken to Tonga by Tohui’a Limapo the daughter of Samoan War Chief Ama of Safata Upolu (Malietoa Family). She married Tongan Chief Tui Ha’atakalaua and their son Ngata became the first Flesh Of Upolu (Tui Kanokupolu). During Ngata’s installation as the first Flesh Of Upolu he wore the Samoan Fine Mat Maneafaiga’a to honor his Samoan Heritage and Ancestors. The Samoan Fine Mat Maneafaiga’a then became the crown jewel or heirloom of the Tui Kanokupolu Dynasty (Current Rulers Of Tonga). Every Tui Kanokupolu wore the ie Samoa Maneafaiga’a during their installations but by the time George Tupou I became King it was no longer wearable so he placed it alongside the European Crown during his installation as the 19th Tui Kanokupolu.

It is no secret that Samoans were legendary Navigators and Canoe builders to the point that our Fijian & Tongan brothers often sought our assistance and expertise. In Fiji today the word used to define a master craftsmen is Mataisau which literally translates to , “The Matai Have Come or “The Matai Have Arrived”. In Tonga Samoan Navigators became Royal Navigators.

FIJI

The Samoan Matai that arrived in Fiji with their relative Ma’afu of the Flesh Of Upolu line in Tonga were Samoan Chiefs & Master Craftsmen Leha (Lesa), Lemaki (Lema’i), Jafau (Tiafau) etc….. These Samoans established Master Craftsmen clans in Fiji and built Tanoa (Kava Bowls), Houses & Drua/Alia (Double Hulled Canoes) and so forth for the Fijians. These Samoan clans still exist in Fiji today.

TONGA

The current rulers of Tonga today is the Tui Kanokupolu (Flesh Of Upolu) Royal line. The Royal Navigators for this royal line were all Samoan Chiefs such as Akauola (La’auola), Fulivai, Ula, Moala etc….. These Samoans Chiefs established the Royal Navigator clan of the Tui Kanokupolu and they have many descendants in Tonga today who are now nobles in Tonga.
