Slime Mold or other fungus?

Yesterday I found this stuff in a naturally eroded cavity in a north-facing cliff of volcanic tuff. The cavity is roughly two feet tall by five feet wide. There appears to be at least 10 gallons of it. There is also a small amount in the crack to the left. This is just below the crest of a rocky ridge. The only organic things above it are a couple stunted or dead ponderosa pines and the moss growing on the rock surface.

Jemez Mountains, Northern New Mexico, about 9,000 feet in elevation.

The amount of biomass of this stuff given the location has me baffled.
