Struggling Low-Time Commercial Pilot Considering Enlistment
I’m a 22 year old female who’s been pursuing a career in aviation for the last 3 years. I got to about 380 hours and a commercial pilot license and then ran out of finances during CFI (certified flight instructor) training. I’ve been delivery driving trying to pay off loans and make ends meet. I’ve applied to so many pilot jobs, tried networking and handing in resumes, but the industry is pretty stagnant right now and any flying job requires at least 1000 hours total time. If I join the guard, I could finish a degree and complete my CFI and multi-engine certificates and instruct my way to the minimum flight hours. But I know the guard is an actual commitment. BCT and AIT would take even more time away from flying and possible deployments could negatively impact my flying progress. I know with my flying experience there’s potential to drop a WOFT packet and maybe fly helicopters later on. I’m dedicated enough and have always thought about flying for the military but I know that route is competitive. Just a lot to think about and looking for advice. If there are any pilots in the chat who can speak on this, I’d appreciate that. Or anybody who’s joined the guard while working through a separate career. I’m an open book even for a reality check. I’m also already talking to a recruiter but still indecisive.
Thanks in advance.
