National Guard troops fatally shoot a man in downtown Memphis

Memphis police say National Guard troops fired their weapons in the early morning hours Sunday, killing a man who was armed with a handgun.

Police say officers were responding to calls of shots fired in downtown Memphis just before 4:00 am local time when they saw "an armed male carrying a handgun." The man — identified by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation as 20-year-old Tyrin Johnson — fled on foot, pursued by Memphis police officers along with Tennessee National Guard soldiers who are assigned to the area.

What happened next was not immediately clear.

"For reasons under investigation, the situation escalated, resulting in two National Guard soldiers firing upon Johnson, striking and killing him," according to a statement from the TBI. Memphis police said the man had "turned toward NG members with his weapon" before the National Guard soldiers fired their weapons and struck him.

Johnson was pronounced dead at the scene. No law enforcement officers were hurt in the incident, according to the TBI.

The TBI says it is investigating the incident at the request of Shelby County District Attorney Steve Mulroy. TBI agents are "working to independently determine the series of events leading to the shooting, including collecting evidence and conducting interviews," the agency said.

The National Guard has been patrolling in Memphis since October of last year as part of a federal task force, established by President Trump, to combat crime in Memphis.

Memphis has one of the highest violent crime rates in the country, according to data from the FBI. But Memphis police say overall crime and violent crime were falling in 2025 even before the National Guard deployment began. Still, some local residents told NPR they welcomed the federal intervention.

A judge in Tennessee sided with local officials, issuing a temporary injunction that blocked the deployment. But a state appeals court overturned that injunction in April, allowing the operation to continue.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation will handle the investigation into the fatal shooting.

Deployment

I have a deployment coming up this September. Iraq is the location of the MOB, that’s the word at least. What should I expect? Can I play GTA6 when it comes out while deployed? I’m also 11B

Will my husband get kicked out for strangling me?

Argument was nasty so I'm sparing ahat details I can. Lots of yelling and arguing, then he held me against the ground and strangled me. He's done stuff like this in the past but I've never gotten anyone involved. He called the cops himself, intending to get me removed from the house but obviously that backfired. We live on an airforce base so security forces came and interviewed us then they called the county cops. Someone from fap came and said the situation is pretty bad since strangulation was involved and they take that particularly seriously. I had to be interviewed by his leadership as well and was told I'd have to talk to them more down the road

He's being held at the county jail for 3 days while the police investigate him. I was told the army is opening an investigation alongside the county police and to expect a lot of people getting in contact with me.

But right now I'm wondering if he's going to get kicked out of of army. He's in the agr as an admin nco. His job is the only thing he cares about. Everyone kept telling me "it's not looking good" but wouldn't tell me what that meant. I'm extra clueless about military stuff and don't know who else to ask

Told my trip was approved, now being told I’ll be AWOL for missing drill

Hi everyone, I’m looking for some advice because I’m not sure what my options are.
I recently graduated AIT and Basic Training and was assigned to a small, fairly rural unit. Shortly after arriving, I told my chain of command that I had an international trip planned a few months later. They looked into whether I would be allowed to go, and I specifically waited until they told me it was approved before purchasing my nonrefundable tickets.
At no point did anyone tell me there was additional paperwork or that I needed to submit anything before leaving. Since I had just gotten out of training, I didn’t really know the process, so I trusted what they told me.
Now my trip is only a week away, and a friend asked if I had completed a SUTA. That was the first time I had even heard of it. When I asked my chain of command about it, they told me I’d be marked AWOL for the two drill days I’d miss.
The confusing part is that another soldier told me my unit doesn’t provide SUTA forms and that soldiers usually have to create the document themselves before getting it signed. If that’s true, I had no idea, and no one in my chain of command ever explained that to me. I’ve been messaging them trying to figure out what I’m supposed to do, but my messages either get ignored or brushed off.
assigned under the supply section, and because we’re a small unit and we just got back from AT, there honestly isn’t much going on right now. It feels like a lot of the blame is being put on me, even though I was relying on the guidance my leadership gave me and wasn’t told there were any additional requirements.
At this point, I’m not sure what to do. Am I in the wrong here? How serious are two AWOLs for missing drill, especially given the circumstances? Is there anything I can do this late to avoid being marked AWOL? Any advice would be appreciated.

National Guard Patch Request :)

Hi!

I collect vintage Americana and items from historical events in US history. I’ve noticed national guardsmen wearing these ‘America 250’ patches and would love to see about getting one!

(If there are any guardsmen reading this) I’d love to meet and talk! I would be willing to pay as well. I think it’s important to document physical media like this, for all I know it’ll end up in a museum one day.

Thanks a ton!!!

MEPS DRUG TEST

How long did it take you to get a notification for a negative or positive drug test after MEPS? Or did you never hear anything about it from your recruiter if it was negative?

Future Jag Officer

I am currently enlisted in the army national guard and I will be an ROTC cadet this fall and I would like to know what my best path to becoming a JAG officer would be. I will have the option of going active or potentially switching branches if there is a better path somewhere else. Should I stay in the guard or try to get an ed delay or try to do the active FLEP program. I am not in a hurry and wouldn’t mind spending a couple of years in a more traditional military role as a lieutenant and I would love any insight or advice that you all have

Should I go Active, Reserves or National Guard?

I’m 27 F , based in Illinois and currently working as a security officer and I go to college full time for Criminal Justice and Cyber Security. I want to go active duty, get the best out of the benefits after or during my contract. (Especially college) during my contract I plan on stacking firefighting, EMT, or police certifications and hopefully go into the police force after my contract as well. End Goal is joining SWAT/ special police forces, Firefighting or Cyber crime defense/Forensics.

Im currently a Full time Security Officer which qualifies me for the application for my cities police department so as of recently and I did put in an application but the process takes about a year or two. The money isn’t bad and my employer is completely supportive of me leaving for training/Drills since it’s a veteran owned company.

I’m almost done with my Associates degree and I’d like to finish it and pursue more education. I’ve always wanted to enlist in the military but I don’t want to put a stop on the college side. I want to be able to live a good combination of both Civilian/College and Military. I don’t mind volunteering for deployments so I can have some military experiences. I’m even open to becoming an officer in the military if I have the degree and qualifications to do so in the future.

As far as MOS’ choices, I’ve heard that Local PDs don’t have a lot of interest in hiring MPs due to them being more military focused and the Local PDs wanting someone they can train their way. So I’m not sure if being an MP will look good on record? That job does sound ideal for my situation, but I’m also open to Combat jobs.

Overall, I’m looking for the best way to go to school for free while continuing my degree, go on deployments for the experiences and focus on building my career to become a police officer/SWAT/Investigations.

Disability

I am prior service with the Army National Guard and separated honorably recently. I have one rotation overseas and did nothing to file disability to get benefits. I plan to re-enlist under a different MOS and immediately start sending paperwork in to do it right this time to get benefits this contract. Also plan to go back overseas to help with that claim and make it easier for proof of injuries.

However, in the guard, since we do not have a sick call, who do I go to after drill to get it in writing that I got hurt during my weekend or AT drills? Do I go to a civilian urgent care or talk to a medic and my line leader first?

Additionally, does this need to be a severe injury, or are aches and pains able to be reported as well? As in, hurting my back after unloading ruck sacks off of an LMTV per se, or do I need to actually get seriously injured for it to be approved.

Thank you!

Army National Guard to Air Force ROTC

I’m currently in the Army National Guard on a 3x5 contract and have been in for about 8 months. I’m currently in AIT.
I’ve been seriously considering becoming an Air Force officer through AFROTC. My plan is to start AFROTC while finishing my degree, and by the time I would actually commission, my 3-year Selected Reserve obligation should already be complete.
If that’s the case, is getting a DD Form 368 (Conditional Release) usually pretty straightforward, or can units still make it difficult even after the 3-year obligation is over?
Has anyone here gone through something similar?

Did anyone come back to neglected pets or homes?

I DEMOB in two months. I see the end in sight after being stuck in theater during the Operation Epic Flop. A month ago I saw a picture of my dogs, and they’re both overweight. Severely. I used to take care of them, feed them a strict diet, and walk a ludicrous amount of miles a week to keep their anxiety and energy levels down. I didn’t have much of a choice for the dog sitter, but I figured something was better than giving them away.

I also used tend to the maintenance of the house, and if my pets are of any indication, I doubt my house has been maintained properly. Did anyone get off a MOB to come back to an even greater struggle than what was experienced overseas? I hate to be depressing, but this thought has come to mind more frequently

[NY] I recently went to detox and I am completely sober at this point. I have two years experience as an EMT. Is the National Guard worth looking into?

I definitely want to help my community. I was curious of anyone’s experience in the training process. I’m not exactly completely fit but I’m not unfit either. Would it be a mistake to speak to a recruiter?

12W or 12N

I'm currently thinking about joining the Texas Army National Guard next summer which is the summer I graduate highschool. I like a hands on trade type of mos, but wondering which mos between the two or if there is another one that would be best once i transfer over on the civilian side to work in trades.

Building a retirement points tracker for the Guard (works for Army too). As an Air side E-7, tell me what I'm missing about your side

ANG MSgt, 14 years, building an off-duty app to replace the many online crap calcs that you fill in occasionally and then wonder if it's right. The BLUF is an app will hold your info and you can update it simply as you progress towards retirement.

The core is component-agnostic because the math is: points per drill/AD day, 50-point good years against your anniversary year, points ÷ 360 × multiplier × High-36 (or BRS), and the fiscal-year 90-day aggregation for the reduced retirement age which most of the time is a hassle and is the rule everybody miscalculates.

Plan so far: two-tap drill logging, alerts before a good year slips, a pay projection that shows its entire work, stranded-days warnings before 30 Sep, and everything stored on-device only.

For the Army side specifically:

1. What do you use now? RPAM printouts, a spreadsheet, nothing?
2. What's the most confusing part of the points/retirement system from where you sit?
3. Any Army-specific wrinkle (RST tracking? ADOS quirks?) an Air guy would blow past?
4. Would you actually pay a one-time few bucks for scenario features if the tracker itself is free? Honest answers are appreciated.

Attempting to Join

Hello. I want to attempt to join the National Guard later this year. I was previously in the Coast Guard and got a DUI, and I was discharged a year later. It’s a misdemeanor on my record.

Tried to join the Army a few years later and I was told that because it was a misconduct discharge under UCMJ, I couldn’t join. The recruiter showed me the manual as well. I don’t know if that’s something that still could’ve been waived or not. I’ve heard prior service isn’t a recruiters first choice to work with as it is.

At first he did seem to want to work with me, and it may have been an error on the Coast Guard’s part, but my DD-214 was never finished, and I never received an RE code. That’s why he said let’s try and see.

I told the recruiter I never received my last DD-214, and I could only show him past DD-214s from prior active duty and deployment time as a reservist.

He pulled my REDD report, and nothing in my military record showed the DUI either. So, he tried to process me but he said MEPS might stop me because of that section of the manual he pointed out, and basically my charge would conflict with my time in service and be obvious at that point. After that he didn’t send me to MEPS to see what would happen.

When I was arrested while in service, I told my command right away, and I think because of that (I’m really not sure why), I was given an honorable discharge. I understand the Coast Guard has a zero tolerance policy now.

In December this year, my probation will be over, fines paid, and everything taken care of. I have good credit, no debt, no other blemish on my record.

I’m saying that to say even if I walk into a recruiting office with everything handled, and no financial, medical, etc disqualifications, is it still possible to join the National Guard with a DUI and misconduct discharge on my record, according to policy? Is this waiverable at all?

Struggling Low-Time Commercial Pilot Considering Enlistment

I’m a 22 year old female who’s been pursuing a career in aviation for the last 3 years. I got to about 380 hours and a commercial pilot license and then ran out of finances during CFI (certified flight instructor) training. I’ve been delivery driving trying to pay off loans and make ends meet. I’ve applied to so many pilot jobs, tried networking and handing in resumes, but the industry is pretty stagnant right now and any flying job requires at least 1000 hours total time. If I join the guard, I could finish a degree and complete my CFI and multi-engine certificates and instruct my way to the minimum flight hours. But I know the guard is an actual commitment. BCT and AIT would take even more time away from flying and possible deployments could negatively impact my flying progress. I know with my flying experience there’s potential to drop a WOFT packet and maybe fly helicopters later on. I’m dedicated enough and have always thought about flying for the military but I know that route is competitive. Just a lot to think about and looking for advice. If there are any pilots in the chat who can speak on this, I’d appreciate that. Or anybody who’s joined the guard while working through a separate career. I’m an open book even for a reality check. I’m also already talking to a recruiter but still indecisive.
Thanks in advance.
