Any other vegans in Cookeville?

Just putting my little flag out there. Are there any other vegans in Cookeville? If so, I'd love to get together for a potluck or something...

FYI if you go to a Mexican restaurant

I just visited a Mexican restaurant that had a separate vegetarian menu, and I asked if one of the dishes could be made vegan. I was told yes.

When the food came out, though, I started to become suspicious. I asked whether the rice contained chicken powder. The server went to check and came back to tell me that, yes, the rice did contain chicken powder.

Then I asked about the salsa.

She went back to check again and returned to tell me that the salsa also contained chicken powder.

I asked for both items to be taken away.

It’s also worth noting that the tofu fajitas came with the usual fajita onions and peppers, but the tofu itself had literally no seasoning on it. It tasted like someone had taken it straight out of the package, cut it up and put it on the plate.

At that point, I was understandably upset and asked to speak with the manager. I was told they were working on a new menu and making some changes.

This is now the second Mexican restaurant I’ve visited that has put chicken powder in food presented as vegetarian.

Don’t assume that rice, salsa or other seemingly meat-free sides are actually meat-free just because they appear on a vegetarian menu. Ask specifically about chicken broth, chicken bouillon and chicken powder.

Be wary.
