Why Smoking Ruined My Workouts,And How I Fixed It

I used to smoke while trying to stay fit. At first, I thought it didn’t matter. I would drag myself to the gym, but halfway through a run or even during basic sets, I was out of breath. My recovery felt slow, and some days I couldn’t push as hard as I knew I could. Lifting heavy weights became exhausting, and even small improvements in my strength felt impossible.

Eventually, I realized the cigarettes weren’t just affecting my lungs they were holding back every part of my fitness. I decided to quit. The first week was tough, but within a few weeks, I noticed a huge difference. I could run longer, lift heavier, and recover faster between workouts. My stamina improved, and workouts actually started to feel enjoyable instead of a struggle.

Quitting smoking didn’t just make me healthier it made me stronger, faster, and more consistent in the gym. Now, I look back and realize that every cigarette I smoked was a roadblock to my own progress.

I think I’ve been training shoulders wrong this whole time

I used to focus mostly on heavy shoulder presses because I thought that was the main way to build bigger shoulders.

Every shoulder day, I was trying to push more weight and assumed that was enough.

But lately, I’ve noticed my shoulders feel way better when I focus more on lateral raises, rear delts, slower controlled reps, and not just lifting as heavy as possible.

I think I ignored side delts and rear delts for too long, and that might be why my shoulders never looked as wide or balanced as I wanted.

For people who built noticeably better shoulders, what made the biggest difference for you?

12 weeks of consistency. Biggest lesson: I was overcomplicating everything.

Started with no perfect plan, just wanted to prove to myself I could stay consistent for 12 weeks.

I used to overcomplicate everything and switch workouts way too often. This time I kept it simple and focused on doing the boring stuff well.

Biggest things that helped:

  1. Same workouts every week instead of constantly switching

  2. Tracking lifts and trying to improve slowly

  3. Eating enough instead of guessing

  4. Sleeping more and not missing twice in a row

  5. Taking progress photos so I could actually see changes

I’m not claiming to know everything, but this was the first time I actually stuck to a proper structure and saw progress. Happy to answer questions.
