Early Morning Walk: Rural England: 03:30-05:10

Started in Nautical Twilight, walked through Civil Twilight and beyond the Dawn.

The light is magical in the early morning.

Achieved a one-year milestone during my walk this morning. I've walked over 11k for the last 365 days (concurrently over 20k for the last 134 days with some 30k days).

Milestone: 365 @ 11k

Achieved a milestone this morning and I'll admit a little self-satisfaction.

I've walked over 11k for the last 365 days (concurrently over 20k for the last 134 days with some 30k days).

There's a bit of a story behind it...

Sometimes in life there's a moment in life that acts as a turning point... I'd been a long distance hiker and mountain climber in my younger years, but that'd faded over recent years with work and life etc. to the extent that I wasn't even doing 10k steps on a lot of days.

I'm T2 Diabetic and when I signed up for a Diabetes steps challenge with friends starting July 2025, I begun training for it from 1st May. Then in June 2025 a Diabetic crisis hit hard and made me face up to a few things I'd ostriched about for years and make some lifestyle changes.

Part of this adjustment and the need to train was rediscovering my love for early morning walking which after what had happened I needed to build up again. I built up over a couple of weeks at the end of June '25. Completed the challenge surprisingly easily and then over the next few months continued to build up to where I am today.

I have a fairly senior job that requires a lot of meetings and a fair bit of desk work, so to make sure I get my walking in, I approach my day by getting up early and setting off out immediately (out around 03.30 at this time of year , walking 5+ miles daily - back home by 5.20am-ish). I walk a circuit through and between two villages in rural England and am finished comfortably before life kicks in and the working day / commute hovers into view. It also means that the 11k minimum I set myself is already reached and breached by the time I sit down for my morning coffee.

Just moving about the house/office etc. gets me close to the 20k mark. Other walks later in the day are work/life dependant. I usually find time for one, even if it's lunchtime or late PM after work... takes me into the 20s. I'll also add a 30/45m Treadmill session with weights into some days.

June 2026's Walking

Step total a little down on recent months (lowest since February) but happy enough with the consistency.

Dealing with a bloody corn this week, so had to reduce distances (and consequently, steps) until I can get my Podiatrist to remove the damn thing on Friday.

Walked through Nautical Twilight, Civil Twilight and Dawn into Sunrise. No actual sunrise on the longest day, though, as it was quite cloudy after dawn.

Right now is a magical time of the year to walk early here in the UK.

Started in Nautical Twilight. Walked through Civil Twilight, before finishing shortly after Sunrise, although, typically, being the UK, that was obscured by cloud.
