How do you know when it’s safe to increase your step count?

I WFH and am a homebody, so I’ve been pretty sedentary for a few years. Last week I decided to make a concerted effort to get more steps in. Using my iPhone to track, I got 8,000 the first two days, and that was fine. The third day I got a little over enthusiastic and did 17,000. Sadly, I have been paying for it since with ankle and shin pain. I’m basically out of commission. It’s a bummer.

Once the pain has gone away, I want to get back at it though. My question is, how do I know when I can safely increase my steps? When can I bump up to 10,000 or 12,000 or more? I have a decent amount of free time, and I want to use it to walk. But I don’t want to injure myself again.

Potentially relevant info: I’m 37F. I’m 5’1”. I don’t own a scale so I don’t know my exact weight, but last time I went to the doctor I was about 130 lbs.

Thank you in advance for any advice!

Edited to add: the ankle and shin pain began when I woke up the next morning. I didn’t “walk through the pain” or anything. There was no indication.

Do you manage to walk during vacation/travel?

I took this picture in Hildesheim (Germany) while I was on vacation there for a festival 🙂 I managed to take a walk in the park even if I was tired and it was very hot. Just out of curiosity, do you manage to walk or exercise while on vacation? Or am I too obsessed? 😃

I'm done counting steps

Apologies for the long post. I've been so motivated just being on this sub, and I can give something back for the first time after walking for a decent length of time. I'm so sorry if this has been pointed out before.

It's taken me a few months, but after a couple of days thinking, I see no value at all in counting steps. On Monday's walk I did 14,110 steps and walked 8.2 miles. The app wasn't particularly impressed with this, as I doesn't think I'm improving or done enough steps, as I'd set the daily target to focus on steps. I'd just walked a good distance, and it was mega disheartening for me!

The crucial part for me now is the distance and the time. From now on, I'm just concentrating on pace. Getting the heart rate up and continuing my personal challenge to get into the cardio zone consistently for an entire walk. Even if you're walking less intensely (and I'm not always out hammering the pavement!), you might be surprised at how little counting steps brings to your walk. Looking at step "averages" or making a step target is fine if you are taking "average" steps, but you might be selling yourself short or creating a false positive.

I've definitely fallen victim to getting too bogged down with the data. Perhaps wanting a pat on the back from my watch was a good motivator at first, but I lost sight of the enjoyment of walking and the other benefits it brings like fresh air and the environment around me.

I'm not saying any of this to be negative, quite the opposite, stopping counting steps is a positive change for me. Have a look at your own data, app or whatever and see what you think. I'm glad to be evolving and this is a kick up the arse, reminding me to always enjoy being out and not make it all about numbers 😊

Bought a treadmill recently, life changing

Currently work in healthcare, so I do a good portion of my walking before three in the afternoon each day. There are definitely walkable areas where I live, but I also lack in friends and don't want to go alone haha. But, found a listing for a 2009 full size treadmill for $50 about three months ago. Gently used, and has a lot of life left. I try to get in about an hour at a 3.5mph pace a couple times a week. Burning more calories and actually feeling a lot better physically. I am a long time lurker in this subreddit, and enjoy seeing others victories. Thought I would post my stats in the past month.

To address the gap in tracking, on my days off I don't usually wear my watch unless I am on the treadmill. I like to be lazy twice a week :)

p.s. if anyone has any non-nickel sport bands for the google pixel watch, please throw your recommendations my way! currently wrapping the metal clasp in a bandaid (๑•﹏•)

Pre diabetic wake up call

I had my first annual check up with blood work since I was a child. I’m in my 30’s now. Was told I’m pre-diabetic, 6.4 was my ha1c numbers. Doctor suggested Mediterranean diet, which I’ve been following, and exercise. I guess I just needed a reality check to take my health seriously

Sticking to walking from now

Genuinely sorry if this post is not allowed on here, but tonight made me realize i’m more fit to be able to walk.

I usually walk after work for about 1.5hr and get a good amount of steps I’m satisfied with. Since the sun has been setting earlier, tonight I tried to jog so I’ll still be back home before it’s dark.

I regret that and will continue sticking with walking.

What apps for step tracking do you use?

What are your favourite step-tracking apps you are using? if any

There're so many of them - I downloaded all the top ones and some newly advertised ones; Don't get the difference with basic Apple Health, but some allow you to share walking data with your own pictures. That's pretty nice, though

Basically, now I'm walking and watching the same number on my iPhone via ~10 different apps xd

An Evening Walk

Tarantula season is kicking off on the mountain near my house, and so for the next 2 months or so I will try to take walks there to look for them. Not everybody's cup of tea I know, but they are much smaller than I expected, and not really interested in people, and I appreciate that they are just trying make a go of it like the rest of us. I didn't see any today, but I did see some bats, and some deer, and I heard an owl.

I am marking this post NSFW to be mindful of people who are afraid of spiders because there is a spood pic at the end.

I walked 418 km from Bielefeld to Berlin in 83 hours

This was my longest walk so far. I completed the 418 km route in about 83 hours, with short breaks along the way. It was exhausting, but also one of the best experiences I’ve ever had. Has anyone here attempted a similar long-distance walk?

What app does you use for walking routes

Hi guys, want to start taking walking more serious, but need to start on easy routes. Getting g bored walking around streets.

Do you guys use apps to find your routes to take you on and which ones are they? I don't really want to pay to use an app. Any help is appreciated 👏 💐

I did it tired

Hi guys. I was so tired this afternoon.

I've had a really depressing day. Going out and seeing all the birds cheered me up. This is a photo of a galah. There were happy family birds around that are a grey bird that aren't super cute, but they have the cutest little squeaky chirps. I find them adorable and chubby little birds.

My goal for this week is to walk 6 times in the week. I did walk for 30 minutes. I'm very proud of myself.
