Heels?

For all my women - have you completely given up on the idea of wearing heels for the rest of your life after surgery or have you been able to circle back?

How do you deal with the reality of how severe your PE was?

I (28F) had a saddle PE 8 months ago and while I now realize how severe the situation was, I can’t help but feel like it wasn’t as big of a deal.

I had a MACI knee surgery last year and part of the healing process requires for the knee to have constant swelling for at least the first 6 months. Once I was cleared to walk post-op, the swelling traveled from my knee all the way to my ankle. Early on if I couldn’t have my feet up it swelled pretty bad but I constantly iced and ate and anti inflammatory diet to try and keep it under control.

Before I had surgery I was in between birth controls. I had my IUD removed and requested to be switched to the pill. My primary knew about the bc and the surgery but my surgeon and OB were with different hospitals and it never occurred to me that there could be issues.

I went on a road trip to Virginia Beach about 2 months post surgery and did more walking than I had in months. This was when I first felt the swelling in my calf. No redness or anything but my leg was always swollen and I thought I was just sore because of the sudden burst of activity. I really didn’t think anything of it. Fast forward to 5 months post surgery: I’m walking regularly and doing 15 minutes of peloton 3 times a week and I’m trying to get more consistent with the exercise and stretching. I feel soreness in my other calf and thought I just pulled something.

3 weeks later I’m cycling and I’m getting exhausted faster than when I started. I would get to work and get out of the car and by time I hit the front door I was so out of breath I was about ready to fall out on the floor. Even at rest it would just feel like I had to work hard to breathe normally and even then I still couldn’t take a deep breath. No pain, just struggle. I’m emailing my surgeons nurse (I prefer email bc I can be forgetful) about my concerns thinking it was a bad reaction to medication. I couldn’t really get a timely answer from them so I went to the ER after a few google searches. After checking in and getting the CT and xray…etc they let me know they found clots and I had to be admitted. I was admitted at midnight and at about 8am next day I was getting my thrombectomy to remove the clots from my lungs. I ended up staying for 5 days due to more clots being found in my legs and needing to have them removed (from the non surgery leg) and additional monitoring. I ended up being on eliquis for 7 months and I’m off now but the whole thing is insane to think about.

I feel silly because the only reason I waited around for a week or 2 before getting checked out was because I was mostly just uneducated and I just assumed I was out of shape even though I had never felt anything like that before. I didn’t know that the birth control could have caused anything like that and I never received any warning from any of my doctors. I feel like my surgeon did give a brief “be wary of blood clots” but it was hard to tell because of my already swollen leg and I never had any discoloration or anything. And it’s also hard finding a description of the type of soreness you’re looking for.

They didn’t tell me at the time how serious it was but after the thrombectomy they let me know that if I had waited any longer I would have died. And it’s wild because I didn’t feel like I almost died. I felt like I couldn’t really breathe but that’s it. No pain or anything and I never had a stroke or heart attack and I feel like it’s dramatic to say I almost died even tho that’s what happened. I feel like I can’t talk about it out of fear of sounding like I’m over exaggerating but every time I think about it, I get a little in my feelings because it definitely could have gotten worse very quickly.

I really just said all this to vent and to say it’s hard out here but it’s even harder to get rid of me apparently 😝
