14 days post op - hunger at night

Hi,

I am looking for some tips. I am 14 days post op gastric bypass. During the day I barely feel any hunger, I do well with eating, can tolerate almost everything my team allows me to eat. Progressing onto soft food today.

The issue for me is at night. I go to bed around 10 or 11 and by 12 or nearly 1 at night I am suddenly very hungry.

I usually have some fruit and yoghurt at 9 pm and feel satiated after that until it hits me at night.

Is it purely something to get used to or how can I combat this? I can’t tell if it is head hunger or body hunger, the source seems my stomach but so far I haven’t given into it and by morning I am not hungry anymore…

Constipation right after surgery

Update: I have since had a bowel movement. It wasn’t easy and needed some help but what a relief! Thanks everyone for your input and experiences!

Original post:

Hi, I had my gastric bypass last Friday and so I am 4 days post op now. I haven’t had a bowel movement since the Thursday before surgery.

Beforehand I heard that it is quite normal to be a bit backed up after surgery with the side effects of some of the medication and also the sheer lack of food and fiber to pass.

My dietitian and surgeon said the same, that I shouldn’t be surprised until a week later. However, one of the nurses said if I didn’t have a bowel movement by yesterday evening to start taking my liquid laxatives. I have started taking their recommended doses of it and although it helps with passing more of the trapped wind, still no proper movement.

I think the nurse made me feel a bit more nervous about this now and looking for some support. Should I be worried or is it totally okay to give it some more days while taking my laxatives and trying my best to hit my fluids and protein?
