Internal Herniation

Hey guys,

I have had to have a gastric bypass recently but not for weight loss. It was for me a life saving procedure due to a duodenal blockage.

This has all come to ahead very quickly, as possible other options dwindled after many months of research on my end.

So I am 28 days out from my surgery and am, because this is my way, looking into associated risks and not loving them.

I understand that the Roux N Y is a very effective weight loss tool and I am not disparaging anyone having said surgery. But between surgery and not, I would have preferred not :)

I have read accounts on here of people getting repairs for internal herniation (the gentleman from Hawaii posts semi-regularly, and my heart goes out to him for his experience). I am just curious as to how many people have experience IH, to what degree, and is this something they were told about before surgery. Not to worry anyone here, just for my own curiosity.

Thanks, guys. X

Low BP, dizzy

I had bypass July 20. My BP was normal at all of my pre-surgery appointments, but my team noticed that it’s been low at all my post-surgery appointments. My grandpa has a fancy machine and I checked it two days ago and it was low there too. I am dizzy often, and I absolutely cannot tolerate being in the sun/heat more than a few minutes without getting very weak and dizzy.

Is this normal? Is it a hydration issue? I’m sipping all day. I’m probably not getting to 64oz but I am sipping with electrolytes all day long.

Protein bar recommendations?

I'm from the UK btw. I'm 10 weeks post op and wanting to introduce protein bars into my diet (fed up of shakes). Currently eating a grenade soft core bar, so hoping that sits alright.

My bariatric team said no nuts or seeds of any kind for 6 months post surgery so nothing peanut butter please 😊

Seat Cushion Recommendations

I need seat cushion recommendations.

Since I've lost weight I've found that the seats in my car are even more uncomfortable. I've always said they weren't the best in comfort, especially for long travel. It is a pickup truck with firm bucket seats. Now, I find then even more so, especially right at my tailbone.

I have a long trip coming up, 2 days there and then 2 days home. No, I cannot fly as I am taking my dogs and will also need to be able to bring extra things home with me. I need seat cushion recommendations that both help tilt the pelvis for proper (ergonomic) lumbar alignment and cushions/cutout that protects the tailbone.

Am I still supposed to dump 13 years out post RNY?

I was in the hospital not too long ago and my doctor said that it’s “quite unlikely” that I’d still dump 13 years out. What’s strange is it’s very unpredictable. I could have had a food a million times before, then I’ll suddenly dump. For example: low fat string cheese. Recently had the same brand I’d always used, and I dumped so bad. I only had that cheese for a snack with nothing else. So my question is, those of you who are as fat out as I am, do you still dump? It’s getting ridiculous. I’m not looking for medical advice. I just wanted to see if anyone is in a similar boat. Thanks!

Pickles and post op week 4

Y'all I am CRAVING a dill pickles like no one's business. On my programs plan weeks 5-7 are Soft Mechanical foods (aka no more puree) cooked veggies are allowed as are whole fruits (minus apple skins and peach skins).

Think I'd be okay for like a pickle spear? The pickling process softens them to a cooked like texture.

I should have asked the nutritionist lol 🤣

New NSV

I’m 2 years (June 2004) post gastric bypass and 200lb lost (HW 435, CW 235). I had new NSV today! I was at the dermatologist and they give you one of those paper robes that opens in the front. I was able to not only close it all the way, i was able to overlap it and actually keep it closed without holding it! Also another of my favorite NSVs, I actually chose the chair with the arms in the waiting room, I didn’t have to squeeze my fat in, and actually had room to spare.

It’s a great reminder that even when the scale slows down and there’s still a long way to go, you can’t ignore those NSV wins!

Post bariatric surgery hypoglycemia

Has anyone experienced this? I had surgery in 2022. For the last two years, I wake up every morning with what feels like very strong cortisol spikes and an anxious/panicky feeling. Not even klonopin touches the morning anxiety. I also seem to wake up every morning around 3-4 am. My labs are all pretty normal and same with my thyroid levels. My dr. wants me to do overnight continuous glucose monitoring to see if my blood sugar drops throughout the night, which could be the cause of this. I only get late dumping through the day if I eat too too much sugar. I don’t have diabetes and have been on zepbound since January. Thanks.

The fear when..

When you realize you can eat more than before. I’ll be 2yrs post op in October and I’ve been noticing I can in fact eat more than I did several months ago. It sparks fear in me. Large portions were a huge part of why I got so large.
Now is my time to realize and make those real lasting changes based on willpower not the surgery cutting my portion sizes.
How do you handle realizing your portion sizes have increased?

Then and Now weight loss edition!

It’s been a few months since my last post so I figured I would update everyone. I have hit the point of “over shooting my end goal”. That’s how the doctor put it last week. Now I have to gain weight. I’m 136 pounds, which doesn’t sound bad but that combined with a fat mass % of 13.3% is apparently not good. So now they want me to eat 1600 to 1800 calories a day to gain some. They (my doctor) spoke with my psychiatrist and she agreed to take me off my
Wellbutrin because apparently with a very low fat% it can cause seizures. Who knew. I also earned myself another referral to my therapist. Because I still have a shit ton to work out. Anyways here’s some then and now pictures for you guys!

Is it time?

Wife asked me if I was ready to start shaving? Can I hold off?
Mind you it’s getting worse since gastric bypass surgery and idk if just being more diligent with supplements regimen will help?

Worried I'm eating too much post-op

I'm 4 months post-op and I'm worried that I'm eating too much or stretching my stomach. I have an extremely hard time knowing when I'm full/feeling full for a variety of reasons but mostly due to bad interoception from autism. For example, for dinner I had two small beef patties with a slice of cheese and about 3/4 of a medium baked potato also with some cheese. After eating I did feel full but that was only after waiting about 5-10 minutes and really focusing on it. Is this considered to be a normal amount? Also if anyone has any tips about figuring out this 'listen to your body' aspect, please send some advice over.

11 months post-op

SW: 333.2 - CW: 178.4

It honestly blows my mind. I realize now, looking back at pictures of myself, just how much my mental health and self imagine made me not see how far I had taken my health.

Before surgery, my therapist and I worked weekly on self imagine and worth to set myself up better for life-long success. It's still very much a work in progress and will forever be a struggle, but the deep seeded (not great at all) thoughts aren't as strong and I thank my therapist and support system for being patient with me and the process thus far and for the future.

I got the surgery because of health complications and I've never felt better. I have a fairly physical job and the stamina I have as well as the ability to move faster is wild.

I, along with many, thought this surgery would put me in the small percentile of unsuccessful post-op results and I couldn't have been so wrong. The results have made me feel so much better, and I'm sure that the confidence will come with time.

Thank you for taking the minute to read and I hope everyone is well and working the best they can for their best life and selves 🫶🏻

What is different about mini gastric bypass surgery?

I’ve been comparing different bariatric procedures and came across mini gastric bypass surgery.

What are the main differences between mini gastric bypass surgery and traditional gastric bypass in terms of surgical approach, expected weight loss, nutritional considerations and follow-up?

Would appreciate explanations from people familiar with the procedure.

underwear 2.5 months post op

hello!!
this is a bit of an awkward question I'm sure but I'm at a bit of a loss. other garments are easier; pants i can belt, shirts just get bigger. I've found that my undies as I've lost weight just start falling off underneath the other clothes and get really really uncomfy (literally got my panties in a bunch, lmao). i used to just wear boxers but as I've gotten smaller they ride up and down and go everywhere and I'm wondering if less fabric might help?

how have you all managed/dealt with undergarments as you've lost weight? are there any cuts that are easier for y'all?
I can't really afford buying a new set of undies every time i drop a size so any recommendations for brands that last long-term & can be taken in would be great

Post-Op ….. Struggle?

Okay, I’m putting this out there to hopefully help get it off my mind. I’m really struggling at 6 days post-op, but not for any of the reasons people usually struggle?

I’m feeling great. I’m doing my exercise, hitting my fluid and protein goals easily, and I feel overall really good. I’m thankful and I know not everyone has that experience.

But…… I just want some solids. Like, it’s been consuming my brain space for the last 48 hours. I don’t want anything crazy. I’d be happy with some ground turkey or cheese or egg or literally anything except more protein shakes. But I’m also scared because things have gone so good, what if the wheels come off when I try to reincorporate actual food?

My two week checkup is still 9 days away, which feels like a lifetime.

I feel guilty because I know it could be so much worse, but y’all I’m dying over here.

“Healthy” BMI - unlocked!

I’ve gone from morbidly obese to healthy BMI! I’m delighted 😀 HW 137+ (kg) sw 125, conversion surgery 85, CW 70.

The weird thing is I feel no difference in my body. I still expect people to analyse/criticise what I eat, roll their eyes when I browse normal clothing, or have teenagers mutter insults as they pass me. I still feel huge. It stuns me to have people comment I’m getting thin, don’t need to lose weight, and blows my mind that stuff I bought pre-op (my previously “slimmer” clothes) are now way too big to wear.

Anyone else hate how much people look at/comment on their bodies now?

F/41/5’6” [289lbs > 160lbs = 129lbs] (35 Months) I wanted to lose weight. Somewhere along the way, I fell in love with getting strong.

I spent most of my life believing I just wasn’t an athletic person.

I started this journey at 289 lbs. I eventually had gastric bypass in April 2025, which was an important tool in my weight loss, and I’m incredibly grateful for it.

But somewhere along the way, this stopped being primarily about getting smaller.
I started lifting. Then I found calisthenics. Then I started wondering what else my body could do.

Now I strength train, run, and spend an unreasonable amount of time trying to convince my 41-year-old body that it would really enjoy doing things like L-sits, wall walks, pull-ups and eventually handstands. 😂

I’m 160 lbs in the second photo. I’m stronger than I’ve ever been, and for the first time in my life I don’t exercise because I hate my body or because I’m trying to make it smaller.

I exercise because moving it is fucking fun.
Still working on the handstand, though. 😏

Liver Shrinking Diet

I have been on the Liver Shrinking Diet since Friday 8/14 and my surgery is schedule for 8/28. I am suffering!! i feel like im not doing it correctly and it’s not going to be successful because I am so sick! I’m nauseous all the time, dizzy and lightheaded, have a terrible headache, and not to forget, hangry! I didn’t expect to feel so awful and now I’m second guessing if Im going to be able to go through with the surgery all together. I guess I’m just looking for any advice or encouragement because after over 6 months of excitement and positive thinking, i’m starting to think I should back out.
