I dont own a car and I am being pressured

Dinner: whole loaf of banana bread🫩

I am 25 and yes, I dont own a car. I started making my own money and build my life late. I was 21 when I left my abusive family and started life of my own with 200$ in bank account at the time. Today after 4 years, finally I am in the good position to provide for my life. I recently moved in to my own apartment too. I know my next goal is to get a car. I have been saving up for it and before winter is the goal to get one. But the pressure has been crazy on me at work. The other day I was at work event and was talking to company people and few of those asked me where I live and I said i live in the city(event was at suburbs). They were like how do you commute to work and I said I take train or bus. Sometimes uber(after train walk to office is far so sometimes bus doesnt come on time). Then one of them was like oh I have seen you taking buses multiple times (giving me the face look🙄😏). And as in like I am dying of poverty or smth. And after my senior manager was like when are you getting a car. Like too much talking about me getting a car. Now I am feeling ashamed to walk to the bus station and my worst nightmare is seeing my coworkers passing me with their cars. It makes me feel like failure in life. As i grow old I really understand the power behind the sentence “ people welcome you by your look”. I feel so much judged and them behaving me like a petty. Idk I cried the second I got home today🫤 why should taking bus or train be ashamed??

Speed vs Red Light Cameras

i wanted to start a separate thread on red light cameras.

From a policy perspective, red light cameras haven’t let to demonstrably safer behaviors. In fact, there more instances of rear-end collisions. Here is an article from 2018 that summarizes the ineffectiveness of red-light cameras and the impact on safety.

When I was in Los Angeles, red light camera fines were ~$400 and if I recall correctly, the vast majority (maybe 90%) of the revenue went to a company in Arizona. So even then, the financial benefit of red light cameras doesn’t even stay within the state.

I’d argue that speed cameras are more effective as people are forced to drive more consistent, safer speeds. A cursory search led me to a peer-reviewed article

https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0001457526000977

showing a correlation in reducing speeds via speed cameras. And as we know, any reduction in speed greatly increases survivability.

Policy isn’t easy and appreciate the people on the thread fighting the good fight. I want to make sure we have the right solution for safety for all of us out there.

May Louisa’s work carry on in all of us.

PSA: Bike Repair Tools in Wellesley

Hello fellow commuters,

There are at least 2 bike repair stations in Wellesley along Rt 16 (Washington St). One is located on the east bound side at Warren Park heading about a mile from the Newton border. The other is on the westbound side located outside the PD near the square. You can hang your bike, tire levers, pedal wrench, Allen wrenches, screwdrivers, pump (Schrader and Presta), and other tools.

Maybe on some crowdsourced maps the repair stations can be highlighted too? Not sure how…

Some issues I've been having with commuting biking.. does anyone relate, what can I do?

I basically only wear jeans. I don't feel comfortable wearing anything else really, but when I bike it causes soreness,, like.. the skin gets a bit raw on the thighs where it sits on the bike seat. Also while wearing a pad, it's even worse. It causes more of that sore rawness, but it also makes the seat feel.. harder? So it's kinda painful. Obviously I try to not ride bike while on my period, but sometimes it's necessary. I do not feel comfortable using any product except for pads.
