WIBTA if I ask for my rug back after a breakup?

My boyfriend (27M) and I (25F) broke up a couple months ago. It was amicable and we even stayed friends for a while. After I started dating again he said he didn’t want to keep in contact which I’ve respected and we haven’t talked since. We broke up because I was having some housing instability and I planned to go live at home for a while without knowing if I would move back to the city. He didn’t want to do long distance and I didn’t want to stay, but it was all friendly.

The thing is that when I left I had to get rid of all my stuff. I mostly sold it, gave it to friends, and whatever was left I put on the curb. I also gave my ex a ton of stuff. What I want back is one specific thing: a Persian rug. I found it for free on marketplace but it’s worth a lot. At the same time I have a really emotional attachment to it. My dog loves it and I have so many memories sitting with my friends on it. My grandfather also used to make Persian rugs and it reminds me of him. He knew I was attached to this rug and I even joked that if I ever came back I’d want it back. Also, he didn’t have a rug in his place for years and never went out to buy one, so it’s not like if he gave it up he would have to replace it.

Now that I am actually moving back, I want to ask for the rug. I know he technically doesn’t have to give it back to me. It was a good breakup and he actually helped me a lot with moving stuff. He even sent me back a coffee machine that he bought for me but would never use himself, things like that. On the other hand, there is a TON of stuff I gave to him that I don’t want back: really expensive ceramic pots and plants, a surfboard, hiking supplies and technical gear, and lots of practical stuff like cleaning supplies, lights, pillows, etc. There’s probably more I’m not remembering but I basically let him take anything from my apartment he wanted. I don’t want any of that back and wouldn’t ask for it, just the rug.

So, WIBTA if I reach out and ask for the rug back?
