We should change our view regarding the Mahdists

The Mahdist regime is the founding era of modern Sudan. It's commonly accepted in our country that the Mahdists were anti-colonialist heroes, that they fought the Egyptians and the British. But that couldn't be farther from the truth. They fought their own people first, massacring anyone who didn't accept the prophecy of Muhammad Ahmad. How many villages in Central and North Sudan were depopulated by the people whose descendants would later become the Janjaweed? How can we claim to oppose the RSF if we don't condemn their Mahdist ancestors, Ta'ishi and others? Additionally, the Mahdist regime emerged out of opposition to the banning of slavery, and slavery would go on to thrive under their regime. They are not our heroes.
