MindPADD, a non-minimal launcher for minimal phone use

Maybe some of you already know me from the discord server. I made some different apps for the MindOne one of which a camera app. And i also made a launcher that works great on the device, and is adapted now to work on any.

So after receiving my mindone i started working on a non-minimalist launcher for android for digital minimalists like myself. this sounds like a contraduction but i've build a type of field gear that makes it possible to go back to life outside my smartphone.

I find some stuff important myself: not having to go through many apps, not spending much time on notifications and maybe most importantly not spending a lot of time looking for places around when i look for something specific in a place ive never been.

I called the concept MindPADD (based on Personal Access Display Devices from startrek :')). I've been using the app for many months now myself and did some incremental updates to stuff that didnt work well. I would like other to be able to use it, so i'm applying for some playstore testing (android). and I would love to hear what you all think or would add or remove

what it has till now: notifications on homescreen, media player/controls, something i call grindr for places (parks, bars, culture, book shops and libraries, atms etc close to you with quick navigation), habit tracker and interstitial journaling, widgets

I need some testers for the Play Store, so let me know if you would like to test it, since then i can add your to the tester list 🙃

well for some who like to spend time offline

I now set the switch to airplane mode

Made a little app that shows daily/weekly/monthly quests when you loose reception or turn on airplane mode. The notification tray will show a button saying 'pauze for 10 minutes' when you need your phone.

Made this since the motion app is forced back to the less complete version, and I'm not able to get LocoMoments working any longer since the system keeps the button trigger hidden now..

Hooray for the new update and my alternative Moments app

Fairphone killed the 'switch' broadcast with the new update. which means i can only trigger LocoMoments by binding it at all times to a certain setting on the phone.

Maybe i can connect it to the set mode on the switch settings. but this means that it will also swtich when the switch is not pulled but. i.e. the battery saver turns on of the phone..

What would you prefer as the new trigger for the app?

edit: they also made it impossible to read the current setting for other apps. only through adb can i read it at that specific moment.. tf

Added a pull request for the Moments app of Fairphone

I made an upgraded version of the moment app, adding non Google dependent location, time, day and motion triggers for different Moments. so after setting up moments auto set the right profile based on these axes

Please leave a little emoji response at to have fairphone team pay attention and implement these changes in the official app (and make Moments also /e/os compatible): https://github.com/fairphone/fairphone-moments/pull/2

If you already want to try it out, i published v0.3.0 at: https://codeberg.org/potentialuselessness/LocoMoments-public/releases

In this app there's a workaround to get the switch flip between your preferred launcher when using your phone normally and turning on LocoMoments when the switch is pulled. Explained on the onboarding page of the app.

Looking for testers for MindPADD Launcher

I'm making MindPADD because I miss when technology felt like a tool and not a slot machine. It's heavily inspired by the PADDs from Star Trek and that specific era of early-2000s utilitarianism.

The goal is simple: get you the info you need in five seconds so you can put your phone away and actually live your life.

The colors change according to your Material 3 colors (mine is set to black and white). There has already been some rigorous testing and looking for testers for the playstore.

There is several screens:

- COMMS > all notifications
- TICKER > habit tracker & interstitial journaling
- SIGNAL > audio info & visualizer
- PLACES > grindr for places, see whats closed by & radar view & map view
- WIDGETS > build in and app widgets (under taskbar clock)
- APPDRAWER > under android button

These can be reordered and enabled/disabled in settings (tap+hold on title bar), next to many other settings

If you want to beta test, please DM me your play store email so i can invite you

Thankyouuu!

I build a better version of the Moments app

What it adds over stock Moments

  • Three-axis triggers: each Moment can be bound on place, day, and time, independently. When you flip the switch on, LocoMoments activates the Moment whose conditions match right now (most specific wins). Location is read only on the flip — no background tracking, no Google Play Services.
  • Home-button routing: set as your default launcher, the home button shows the Moment while the switch is on, and a launcher you choose while it's off.
  • No telemetry — Firebase Analytics and Crashlytics removed entirely; nothing 'phones home', and the project builds without any google-services.json
  • /e/os compatible

Edit:

0.2.2 adds:

  • import existing DND profiles
  • cross delete DND <> LocoMoments
  • app reordering (tap and drag in 'visible apps' app menu)

⚠️ important: set 'switch' settings to Battery Saver
set LocoMoments as your default launcher
