AITA for negotiating the salary!
I recently interviewed for a PNC teller lead position after the branch manager suggested I apply. I did the interview. I was selected, and then a recruiter called me and told me that my salary would be 48k with other benefits, mind you. I have almost no experience in banking, but around 3 years of experience in management and cash handling. I looked up the salary range in my area. It came up to around 50K to 52k on average. So I asked him if this is negotiable, and he said you can try, and I negotiated with the recruiter to match up to 50k, and he straight out denied it for 50 and said he can try, but that’s not possible. 49K is the average in your area. So I asked him to at least match that, to which he said that okay, it is possible, and I will talk to the senior and will get back to you & next thing i know he ghosted me for two days. He replied to me after two days that another candidate has popped up, and they are going to interview him on Tuesday, and he will get back to me after that. I just want to understand what I did wrong for negotiating. If they couldn’t do 49, I would have happily taken 48k. I even sent him an email after that. Okay, if I accept the initial offer, will you guys still be doing the interview, and then he said I have let the door open for other candidates they will interview.
EDIT- I want to thank you everyone for your input. I want to mention 2 things that i forgot to mention in the post.
- I work at dollar tree as an assistant manager which pays me 50k including atleast 10 hours of OT every week. Which i told them in the interview.
- I have the offer of stepping up as a manager.
I am sorry for not giving this information before but I want to know if with this knowledge will your opinion change to the situation now?
Only reason i want to switch is because i am not happy with my current situation. I made an irrational decision to negotiate over a $1000. But in my head i was talking about taking a cut.
