Anyone make the switch from an i4 to the new X3 M50?
I love my i4, but I suffer from getting bored of the same car so I often switch every few years to a different style/performance, etc.
I tried the i5, and though the interior is nice it’s just not a good looking car unless it’s a fully spec’d out M60. I also considered the 2026 i4 M60 but it’s basically the exact same car. I would just go with frozen paint and the 20” wheels instead of the 19” my current i4 sits on.
That brings me to the X3. Fully spec’d out it’s a GREAT price. It looks like a smaller XM, but still a decent size and the ride height is nice (I’m 6’1) plus my passengers will all be comfortable in the back. It gets fantastic real world gas mileage around ~30-32mpg. The interior leaves you wanting a bit more though. And I truly wish it had a sunroof/moonroof you can open.
Performance wise, how do current owners feel about the new X3 M50? Does it feel like an M car or does it feel like a discount M? An i4 M60 truly feels like an M performance car despite being EV, it’s an absolute rocket (yes I know that’s the EV torque) but everything about it feels “M”.
Did any of you make the switch from i4 to the new X3 M50? Glad you made it? Regret it? Just looking for some real world feedback not coming from a sponsored/paid YouTube account. Thanks

One week with a BMW X3 xDrive30i as a Volvo XC60 B5 owner
For the past one week, I’ve been driving my friend’s 2024 BMW X3 xdrive30i alongside my own 2024 Volvo XC60 B5, and I just wanted to share my personal experience. I drove around 1000 miles with the BMW. After this experience, I want my next car to be BMW.
To me, BMW felt like an energetic, aggressive, mischievous younger sibling who is ready to throw a punch. While Volvo felt like a calm and composed older sibling.
- The cold start caught me off guard. I didn’t expect the 30i to have that kind of roar. It many not be as loud as M cars but it is loud enough. My XC60 just makes a loud engine sound, but not a growl that puts smile on my face.
- From a stop, the BMW feels more eager to go and has punchier acceleration. I feel more connected with the car. My Volvo is nearly as quick as X3 with 6.5sec from 0-60 but acceleration is smoother and relaxed, not much fun but get's the work done.
- At higher highway speeds of 80+, the BMW feels effortless and feels like it wants to stay at that speed. With my XC60, I am much more aware of the speed. It feels like I have to throttle more to maintain higher speeds and as soon as I lift off the pedal, the car starts slowing down pretty quickly. BMW seems to carry the momentum better and just keeps gliding.
- On highway corners, handling is excellent with X3. I get more feedback from steering, and confident enough to take the corners with the same highway speeds. My Volvo handles good too, but I am not confident enough to cross the corners without slowing down, and I can feel more body movement.
- I am impressed by BMW's fuel efficiency. Even in the sport mode I am getting around 30 MPG. It's a genuine shock to me how it has that fuel efficiency even though it went above 4000RPM several times. In normal mode I get around 27 MPG with my Volvo on highways, the polestar (sport) mode drains the fuel like anything. In winters I get around 19 MPG on my Volvo.
- The biggest let down for me with BMW is the interior and the seat comfort. I felt my Volvo’s seating comfort is much better, and it is more roomier inside. The materials used for the BMW interior could have been better. This is my only complaint.
- Technology wise BMW is well advanced with iDrive with a lot of customizations and options. My Volvo kept it minimal without providing any fancy features like ambient lighting, gauge cluster customization, automatic parking etc. My Volvo has the buggy Google based infotainment system. BMW locks and unlocks itself when I walk away or approach it. I wish my Volvo had that.
- Talking about the design, both has their own design language, and honestly I love them both equally.
I am not sure about the longterm reliability or maintenance, and also not sure about latest X3s. But, as soon as my XC60 builds around $10k in positive equity, I am ready to swap it with the so called "Ultimate Driving Machine". Atleast I will get a CPO one.
Need advice: Would you replace these front tires now or wait?
Hey guys,
Looking for some opinions.
I bought a 2019 BMW X3 M40d with the factory 21” Bridgestone run-flats. The front left tire is worn noticeably more than the front right (pics attached), especially on the shoulder.
I think the previous owner probably drove with the wrong tire pressure, because since I’ve owned the car I’ve kept the pressures correct and the wear now seems to be nice and even.
The rear tires still have plenty of tread left.
Here’s my dilemma: I don’t really want to buy another pair of Bridgestone run-flats. I’d like to switch to a different tire, but with xDrive I’d rather replace all four tires at the same time instead of mixing tread depths and potentially causing issues with the transfer case.
So what would you do?
- Do these front tires look like they need replacing now?
- Would you be comfortable driving them for the rest of the summer?
- Am I putting unnecessary stress on the front diff or transfer case by waiting until all four need replacing?
- Or am I overthinking this?
I’d really appreciate any advice, especially from
people with xDrive experience. Thanks!
Is the new X3 PHEV worth the price?
We'll be moving (2 adults + 2 toddlers) soon to Austria and the plan is to import a used car (1-2 years old) from Germany. Given the crazy taxation on ICE cars and the need for long drives, choice has fallen to a AWD PHEV with a relatively low power ICE (i.e. Volvo XC60 is out).
After some research, the are three finalists:
- X3 (G45)
- X1 (SU11)
- Mazda CX60
Now, the X1 seems small to me for our needs. I am former owner of a BMW X3 G01 and Mazda CX-5 2023...and I simply don't like the X3 lines and internal (while wife is more attracted to the brand). Plus, it is 10k more than the X1 and 15k more than the Mazda. I would go for the Mazda, cheaper and to be better looking. But it's the first PHEV they've done, and it seems there has been issues...
Any direct experience or suggestion?
Thoughts on the rims?
Stock 21in rims. I’m going to add an exhaust and I’m wonder how quad tips pair with the wheels. Should I also get aftermarket rims to make it look more aggressive, lowering springs, or just keep it stock?

On my way to 1200 miles with my new b58, I inadvertently exceeded 4500 RPMs. At least a dozen times.
And might have almost reached redline once (as far as I know). I swear I tried to keep it under, but I’m a human not a German-engineered super machine. How strict are the guidelines and why?
2026 bmw x3 is confusing
Anyone else prefer the 2024 and older bmw x3 for the actual physical buttons? I’m currently in a 2026 x3 rental while my 24 x3 is getting serviced and this has been the most confusing experience ever trying to use this touch screen to control mostly everything
X3 M40i burbles/pops changed overnight after ONE loud pop — anyone seen this?
2019 X3 M40i (B58)
Need some opinions from people who actually know these cars.
Car used to have pretty strong burbles and crackles in Sport Plus — the typical B58 “fun” exhaust behavior, especially on lift-off in lower gears.
Then something weird happened:
While driving a few days ago, I got ONE unusually loud pop from the exhaust. Immediately after that, the character of the exhaust changed noticeably.
Now it feels like:
Burble intensity dropped a lot
Higher gears barely do any crackles anymore
The whole exhaust feels “muted” compared to how it used to be
Still gets occasional pops, but way less consistent
No CEL or warnings
Car drives totally normal otherwise, startup sound seems unchanged.
What’s confusing me is the timing — it literally changed right after that one loud pop, not gradually.
So I’m trying to understand:
Is this normal BMW/B58 behavior or ECU adaptation thing?
Could an exhaust flap/valve be partially stuck?
Or am I just overthinking normal variability?
Would appreciate input from anyone who’s seen this before on the M40i/B58 cars.
how much for oil change
how much do you guys pay for an oil change (G45) at dealership? I paid $220 in the bay area… wondering if I got robbed.

X3 2010 hard shifting
Hi everyone,
I have a 2010 BMW X3 that I bought with 148,000 km.
When I purchased it, I noticed some hard shifting between 1st-2nd and 2nd-3rd gears. It would improve as the transmission warmed up, but it was still noticeable.
I decided to change the transmission fluid. The old fluid came out very dark, but it didn’t smell burnt. The magnet had the expected sludge on it, but I didn’t find any metal shavings.
I replaced the transmission pan and filter, then filled and adjusted the fluid level exactly according to the service procedure, with the vehicle level and the transmission temperature between 30°C and 50°C.
The vehicle now feels much more responsive and efficient. However, after driving about 300 km, I still notice the hard shift from 1st to 2nd, and especially from 2nd to 3rd. Once the transmission has been warmed up for about 15 minutes, the issue almost disappears.
Considering how dirty the old fluid was, I’m thinking about doing another drain and fill to dilute the remaining old fluid that’s still in the torque converter and get the transmission fluid as clean as possible.
My question is: should I reset the transmission adaptations with a scan tool, or should I leave them alone?
I’ve heard a lot of horror stories, and opinions seem to be mixed.
Thanks in advance!
BTW: It’s the GM transmission.
New X3 oil change at 1k miles?
Just bought a 2026 X3 30i. I usually like to change the oil on new cars at 1k. Is this a good idea with this particular BMW model? I’m somewhat new to BMW’s. Thank you!
Need advice: 2017 X3 70K miles suddenly a LOT of issues
Sorry this is so long. I’m not very experienced with Reddit posts:
I had new tires replaced mid-may at BMW dealership. They found issues with the differential and the CV axle. Now I also have turbo and front thrust rod brushing issue. Below are recommendations.
Turbo is leaking: replace
front thrust rod brushing torn: replace
Left front CV axle is seeping: replace outer boot
Right side rear differential seeping oil: replace both rear differential side seals
Additionally, brake pads need replacing soon so there’s that to add to all the costs.
My question is should I do these repairs? The dealership is telling me it;s not worth it as I could continue to have more and more issues.
My problem is I cannot find a car that I like that I also can afford right now. I’m curious if you guys think fixing these would buy me a couple months to look for a new car?
I had an extended warranty that ran out mid-May. The dealership is checking to see if the CV axle repair, and differential could be covered.
Still in love with my 2016 x3
I have a 28i. It’s basic, didn’t come loaded. Bought it about 4 years ago with 70k miles for $13k out the door.
It has only needed tires, brakes, a battery, and the routine oil.
Now… the battery replacement cost was CrAzY and unexpected but… I learned. The dealer I bought from gave me 10 free oil changes.
I just bought a package for 6 more oil changes for $200, that’s probably going to last the remaining realistic life of the car.
It has 150k miles and still hums with no issues. No leaks, no problems. I think I found a diamond, but I love being able to replace basic occasional parts like headlights and taillights cheap and feel like there is less to break.
The car drives so nice and makes my commute (20 miles each way on freeway) so enjoyable.
I know the day will come where it’s time to move on, but I love this car and think it has been great!
Aside from a $900 12v battery and her loving the 91 gas, this car has actually been relatively cost effective.
I know people love to trash BMW for repairs and costs, but I don’t regret the car. I live in California so my next car is probably electric. Hoping BMW makes advances and stabilized their electric platform by then.
Vancouver Green Metallic ???
I wonder if the X3 will get the Vancouver Green Metallic…
When ordering my X3 in October, they had British Racing Green as an option.
It would be good to get this colour in a non-monolithic design that features “door handles”. I dearly hope the G45 X3 LCI doesn’t delete the door handles. I’ve tried to use these on the Mustang Mach-E, and they are impossible to use. I miss the door handles on the G01 so much, especially the unlock sensor in the rear door handles.
Leave it to BMW to delete a feature like opening the sunroof, only to add it back in as a new innovation…
X5 Marketing: The standard two-part panoramic glass sunroof flood the spacious interior with light. The front part can be opened, giving you a blast of fresh air at the touch of a button.
