The tree is the way out but it only works during the night time. Thats why the monsters guard it.
I took this from a theory that was put on subreddit awhile ago. But when and if the town finds this fact out. how are the show writers going to actually make it make sense that they figure it out and how are they going to prevent the towns folks from just deciding to build a structure near or around the tree then put a tailsman up so that they can enter the tree without being attacked by the monsters?
