I’m a millennial who remembers the 90s as a purer time when artists wanted to have integrity and being associated with a Disney pop star was something no “real” musician would ever, ever want to do. In all the years since I’ve never seen a music artist’s whole career and brand be built around celebrity endorsements. That in itself is strange and sus af.

But some of the people they’ve gotten to play along with their game have surprised and sickened me. Robert Smith. Kathleen Hanna. Alanis Morisette. Billy Joe Armstrong. Pink. Oh, my inner teenage heart breaks every time anyone I ever respected participates in this mass-gaslighting event of pretending that she has anything to do with punk or rock music. They must have paid them a LOT or maybe they’re doing it for free for the exposure and revving up their dying careers. Either way it’s disgusting and I wish it wasn’t acceptable.

The way her fans talk non stop about legends “praising” her and “mentoring” her sickens me too. That part is almost worse than the endorsements. They don’t know anything about music or the subcultures she’s supposedly resurrecting. It makes me wonder what kind of end game her PR team has in mind.

This new album doesn’t even make the slightest nods to rock or punk but that hasn’t stopped her stans from insisting it does. Someone compared it to The Talking Heads and I about lost my shit. Her music is mundane and boring. The Talking Heads were brilliant and complex. Maybe her team just wants to make music lovers lose their minds lmao.
