Have any tips on switching energy companies as the tariff ends?

My family and I moved from the US to the UK in early October 2025. Our property manager handled the set up of the energy company that we used. They said if we didn’t like what we were getting we could switch to whatever we wanted to on our own. Obviously, with a major move like this, it never happened.

This kicked off a major back-and-forth with the current energy company for both gas and electricity over the bills. The expected amount I was told at the time that I signed up for the fixed tariff was reasonable. Unfortunately, I gather the house had been out of occupants for a short period of time. We come in and we’re trying to figure out radiators and how to set the heat and everything else. Within two months, the bill more than doubled. It was so bad going back-and-forth with this company that my husband had to reach out to the Ombudsman and file a complaint. They took the case and ultimately it showed that we owed what we owe owed. It did not help that we literally had only half of our display working and I have been talking to the energy company about this literally for six months. So literally day-to-day we had no idea what we were paying rate wise. In the end, the company offered a peace offering of £100 as compensation and said that they would get our display working. It finally started working last week. It has been seven months of frustration.

Yes, I am planning to switch us to a different company - the top one in the industry - who I would’ve preferred from the beginning, but had no time to sort it out. They were at the Everything Electric show near us and I talked to a rep. He said I should reach out to the current firm 49 days prior to moving over an alert them that I was canceling.

Any other tips I should know? I am so grateful for anything, and I will be so delighted when I can go to the other company, which sounds amazing. 🥳

Thank you!
