I have heard two different words for this. One mostly used in catholic communities while the other in Hindu. I understand they are synonyms but wanted to know the roots for the words or even why community prefers the former while the other the latter. Is it the same across other Konkani speakers

I wanted to know if there was to be a Standardization of Konkani language throughout the Konkani speaking community. What would your idea of the standardized Konkani be.

Would you consider it incorporating the words of each and every dialect to create more mutual intelligibility?

How would it be accepted without a fear of loss of your own dialect?

How should the Sindhudurg, Goa, Karwar and Mangalore and Kochi communities share literary resources with each other?

Should the Kannada script be introduced in Goa?

Would there be an incentive to learn a standard Konkani or two different Konkani standards based on practicality. Just like people who learn the different registers of English based on where they plan to live in the Anglosphere.

Would love to hear your thoughts and critiques if there are any to this.

When you'll were younger do you'll remember what words you used for certain things. For eg when I was small my mother and grandmother used to call bathing ghusha😂 because of the water splashing sound I suppose. So instead of saying nhannoitam tuka (Ill give you a bath) they'd say ghusha ghaltam/ditam tuka or for saying nhavunk zai they'd say ghusha korunk zai. Now that I thought about it found it thoda funny 😂. What funny words did you'll use?

What are the first three things that come your mind when you think of the word Konkani? What do you relate it with and why? Very subjective question, I don't think there are right or wrong answers to this.

For me it's the Language, Goa and the food (especially fish). Language first because that's what I grew up with as a connection away from the Konkani speaking heartland of Goa and definitely because eating fish curry rice was something I actually acquired as a taste over time.

How do you'll pronounce the days of the week? And what word do you'll use for week? I'll write how we pronounce it.

Sunday - आयतार

Monday - सोमार

Tuesday - मुंगळार

Wednesday - बुदवार

Thursday - ब्रेस्तार

Friday- सक्रार

Saturday - सोणवार.

I don't remember us using a word for week but if we did, we'd say hafto (हफतो) only. Not the Bible or Newspaper Konkani of सातोळें/सप्तक respectively.

What are some specialities (not including the Malayalam influence) of your dialect which are not found in the others and which dialect is the closest to your dialects. Is there a difference between the Konkani dialect of Kochi and Kasargod?

So I wanted to know if different crop fields have different names in Konkani. Like paddy fields, coconut plantation, tea plantation, mango orchard, etc. I just know that a cashew plantation is called Kajini/काजिनी and a paddy field is called a bhatt/भाट (not sure about this).

What do you call powder in your dialect, like for a masala.

For eg. We say hovdichi buki for turmeric, mirsangechi buki for red chilli powder in our North Goan (Peddnem) Catholic dialect.

So I happened to come across the word 'Auk' for age in the Bible. I couldn't find this word anywhere in any dictionary until I stumbled upon the old Konkani Ramayan and/or Mahabharat and saw this word as औख्य with the footnotes saying it is from the Sanskrit आयुष्य. Is this word used anywhere today? Because I know वय, पिराय and phrases like तुका वर्सां कितलीं are used for age. It looks like a corruption while writing the word with ष. Similarly saw this kind of thing for औषध which became वोखद in Konkani.

Edit: By corruption I mean that it went through the Apabhramsha phase like other modern Indo European languages.

How would you say 'I got completely burnt/ scorched in the sun today' and 'His mother gave him a good scolding for creating a ruckus' in your dialect.

पळय! कितली व्हड ही जमीन, बी पेरून उपजले पाचवे पीक. पिकाळ भूंयेंत व्हांवता म्होंवा-दूद, माड्डूंक जाय मात तुजी कूड.

आयक! खोल न्हंयेच्या घोसघोश्याक, देगेर ताच्या दाट मोळो रोवंया. फळ रसाळ खावंक मेळटलें, वत मात तुका सोसचें पडटलें.

In Konkani I find it interesting that there are two ways in which future tense can be expressed. One is definite and the other is indefinite/uncertain. The uncertain future looks similar to the Marathi future tense while the definite future tense is declinable based on number and gender.

For eg. To come (m./f./n.)

हांव येतलों/ येतलीं/ येतलें

Hanv ietolom/iêtêlim/ietelem

तूं येतलो/ येतली/ येतलें

Tum ietolo/iêtêli/ietelem

तो येतलो/ ती येतली/ तें येतलें

To ietolo/ti iêtêli/tem ietelm

आमी/तुमी येतले/ येतलीं (येतल्यो)/ येतलीं

Ami/Tumi ietole/iêtêlim (iêtoleô)/ietolim

ते येतले

Te ietole

त्यो येतल्यो

Teô ietoleô

तीं येतलीं

Tim ietolim

And for indefinite

Eg. To come (may/shall come)

हांव येईन

However, the indefinite has fallen out of use atleast in my dialect unless when using conditional sentences with 'if/when'.

Interestingly and consequently you don't have to/need to use any special word to say you'll definitely do it.

Notice that the 'e' (as in sell) sound from definite also changed to ê (as in say) in the indefinite.

Do you see such distinctions in any other language you know?

The Romi script pronunciation for iêtêli/iêtêlim, etc. is written how we say it. But in the standard written form it is ietoli/ietolim, etc.
