Vet gave me a new medicine for my cat's arthritis but i'm glad i read the insert beforehand!
**EDITED TO ADD MY RESPONSE TO ALL THESE COMMENTS** I didnt mean my post to alarm anyone, i'm sorry if the tone seems bonkers. I really appreciate the feedback and info! I've had cats who were prescribed the 'dog versions' of other meds before- but i've never seen a warning like this, so it really freaked me out! My vet didnt tell me its safe for cats but the insert will say otherwise. Also, dosage wise, I was confused with their instructions and the dropper measurement so that is why I was checking the insert, but for sure in my confusion I could have given the wrong dosage if I hadn't checked carefully. So I will call the vet on Tuesday. He does have bloodwork that says he is in the early stages of kidney disease.
thank you again everybody! sorry for the false alarm
TLDR: i almost followed my vet's instruction to give my cat a med that the package insert says is dangerous for cats!
My cat is 16 years old and has been on dasaquin for his arthritis. She thought he could try Meloxidyl as well so I picked up his medication the other day but didn't get a chance to start it until tonight. When i opened the bag, i saw the bottle said "for dogs" but i figured if the vet prescribed it for my guy, it was suitable for cats. I was going to just go ahead and mix it in his food but i was a little confused about the dosing instructions- so i reached into the teeny box to wrestle this package insert guide/ tiny instruction sheet out of the glued in compartment inside of the box- i almost didn't because it was super frustrating (i have arthritis too actually!)
Hmm glad i did read it because excuse me??? "ACUTE RENAL FAILURE AND DEATH HAVE BEEN ASSOCIATED WITH THE USE OF MELOXICAM IN CATS" ...Wtf?
I will not be giving this to Charlie. I will be calling the vet on Tuesday. Is there ANY legit excuse for giving me this to give to him?? His name is on the invoice paper AND the sticker they put on the box- it was definitely prescribed to him (not a mix up with another patient) I will be insisting they refund my $31.61 as well.
Any thoughts or experiences?? I am so glad i double checked this package insert and saw this warning before giving it to him!
