Just found out that if you are already at 10 cost animal companions and increase the number further, it will reset one of your companions back to 0 to add the increased cost (notice that my companions after roam free are omen, agamaggan, and… arrow receiver). I also confirmed later in the match that these mini companions are actually summonable, so in some matches it may be correct to avoid playing your companion upgrade cards altogether once you hit 10 to keep your companion pool from being diluted with complete trash.
