Puppy Potentially Ingested Antifreeze
Age: 3 Months
Weight: 5kg
First off, to quell any concerns I took him to the vet immediately and really, I've already talked to a vet, actually 2 vets I just can't stop overthinking about this. Effectively, just got a new puppy, wasn't used to well, having a puppy around and while I was working on my car, coolant spilled underneath it, somehow my dog was able to make his way into the garage, I think by pushing the door open, which I didn't think was possible given how small he is. Anyway, he was unattended around spilled coolant for probably around a minute or two (which wasn't actually a puddle rather damp concrete at a 33/67 split (33% coolant). And as soon as I noticed him in the garage I decided to take him to the VET to be on the safe side. So he had vomiting induced within 20 minutes of whatever happening. Again I have no idea if he actually consumed any coolant. There was no sign of coolant in his vomit, and the VET said that we likely don't need to do fluid therapy in his words "if it was my dog, I probably wouldn't" but that we should do followup blood tests tomorrow and then a few days onwards. Regardless, it's now been 9 hours since this happened and he's shown zero signs of being sick and is still wagging his tail, being excited, eating food, going to the toilet, not overly thirsty and then also sleeping his normal amount as he's a puppy. I also called an emergency vet just to get a price on fluid therapy and they basically concurred with the other vet that if there were no symptoms so far we should just monitor at home.
My main question is this: Considering he is absolutely tiny, I'm assuming that had he actually ingested effectively ANY coolant, he'd be 100% showing signs at this point.. Is this a correct assumption to make?
My second question is this: Do you guys think a blood test tomorrow and then another one 2 days later as the VET reccomended to be safe is worth it if he's showing absolutely zero symptoms? I want to do them but my Mum is insisting he's likely fine. (this would cost $600 AUD and I do not come from a very wealthy family)
I'm going to continue to monitor him throughout the night and if anything is out of the ordinary I will be taking him to the emergency VET immediately. I have also gone and bought a padlock and put it across the gate leading in to the garage to make sure this can never happen again.
TLDR: My 5KG puppy was in a garage unattended with coolant on the ground for approximately 1-3 minutes, have no clue if any was drunk (but, no blue on gums, tongue, snout, face etc..) Was immediately taken to the VET within 20 minutes to have vomiting induced (where no coolant was found) and now 9 hours onwards, there are zero symptoms and he is acting completely normal. However, I'm still stressed out of my mind because I love this dog and it was such a stupid mistake to make.
Thanks.
