Diamond Pattern Disappearing!

I've done a few intermediate sweater patterns before, and admittedly it sometimes does take me a few trial and error attempts before I figure it out. But I have frogged this project 5 times now trying different fixes and I can't figure it out! I attached a picture of what keeps going wrong, and a link to the free pattern.
The Problem: When the pattern switches to "Inc 1 st each end of needle on next and every following alt row" after row 18, the pattern stops lining up.
Additional Info: I am using M1R/M1L inc. I am absorbing the new st into the pattern as instructed. (Ex. when row 3 says P1, K3, I will P1, M1R, K2 as the M1 became the 1st K)
What I Have Tried: using an edge st on all rows, using no edge st (except rows 1 & 2), interpreting the "alt rows" after row 18 as even (as they are labelled in the diamond pattern), interpreting the "alt rows" after row 18 as odd, since that is the natural continuation.
I'm stumped. Any help would be so appreciated! Thank you!
