I’m trying to learn to read granny square patterns and I’ve learned what each symbol means, so I bought some from an Etsy seller. I was able to follow along (I thought) but when I made the one pictured it looked nothing like her example picture. Then I read her *written* directions and it says to do almost every stitch in the blo (back loop only), but how on earth was I supposed to know that looking at this diagram!?!?

Thanks for any help people can offer! I’d love to be able to use this shorthand regularly, but confused as to how to truly know what to do without reading the words and I can’t seem to find a post answering this well (sorry if it’s already asked and answered!!).
