My experience with OneDrive and why I am now at peace without it

I have used OneDrive for years, back when it was no more invasive than Google Drive. Back ups and syncing were optional, it was rather useful back then.

Fast forward to today, OneDrive has been gradually getting fed some kind of cyber testosterone diet.

So saying no to back ups and syncing makes it THIRST all the more.

So here’s when it officially slapped me in the face:

I have been a music producer for many years now, i have made a wealth of productions that I had planned to release once I got out of my mental health rut.

But of course, OneDrive had to go ahead and ERASE a lot of my productions leaving just their folder with no contents within.

I lost a year or two of work (master files for tracks), tried a lot of work arounds that amounted to nothing. In the end, the best choice was to let go.

I had some of my exported tracks survive and made a plan to adapt to the situation. It worked out creatively in the end. But I had to let go of my master files and my coding projects. It was curious.

I did a clean install of windows, wiping everything that was there before. Once i got in, I uninstalled OneDrive (it had already started syncing while I was doing this) and then I just…… felt peace.

No windows updates have brought OneDrive back, my games run smoother because no resources are being allocated to OneDrive.

It is great.

*cough* allow me to slap on my tin foil hat real quick!

All of this got me thinking (uh oh), in this current world of AI, businesses and government entities are struggling to train their AI models with public and private data. Bill gates envisions his servers to replicate/mirror/preserve user PC storage data.

It might be blue sky news, but with all of our data just sitting there, in its amount, they could use it to train AI models. Likely already are tbh.

If anything has been made obvious these past few years, it’s that laws are arbitrary, yes, ARBITRARY. AI doesn’t even have laws or regulation.

My voice has already been cloned to AI and was used to contact my ex proposing new living arrangements in a new country. Huh?

Anyway, bite the bullet, save what you can, do a full wipe of your PC and get rid of OneDrive.

Laptop users should be doing this ASAP as your hardware could use a break.

(Btw the 1-2k you spent on your laptop will be much better spent on a custom built PC next time)

Thanks for reading!

P.S. I would love to read about your experiences should they be similar
