Mini PC for Home Assistant server and video streaming to TV?

Looking for hardware AND software advice for a setup that can:

  1. Be my Home Assistant server—

I’m getting into building ESP32 devices and home automation as well. Trying to learn Node-red etc.

  1. Connect to an 8TB hard drive to stream videos to my TV and wirelessly transfer data from our laptops to the 8TB drive.

  2. GUI with web access and torrenting set-up

-What hardware would you recommend—I want it to last awhile but hoping to not spend too much right now…

-What software setup would you recommend to do all the things above?

Thanks for your insight!

Remembered why I love fallout

Last night, just for kicks, I decided to go exploring instead of doing the same loop of events and dailies I usually do.

While exploring, I decided I would only use whatever gun and ammo I looted first: pipe pistol. 12 ammo. The build wasn’t min-maxed at all.

I also decided not to use a light source to see better.

Ended up being super fun. Without lights it felt more like a horror game—muzzle flashes illuminating rad scorpion faces as they charged closer and I tried to dodge.

Suddenly not every kill was an insta-kill and enemies would swarm me before I could kill them all. I was never truly in danger of dying… except one time, but it felt more exciting.

I had fun exploring the world and taking my time—not rushing to the next event just to get all the loot. It felt like I was playing an older fallout game again.

Don’t get me wrong. I enjoy fo76, but I miss it being a real challenge in the overworld. I miss exploring like you would in a single player play through.

TLDR; If you haven’t tried it in a while—go exploring with only a pipe gun and 12 bullets. More fun than you’d think.

The first two builds that I made, I could move around anywhere on the map and they had automatically joined (almost) everything together in the “stored” category. So I didn’t feel like I needed to worry about figuring out blueprints.

Then I decided to try to make my first really good build. I took a ton of time getting every detail perfect. I was actually kind of proud—players often giving me the “nice build” emote.

On a (stupid) whim I decided to move the settlement to a higher traffic area and, you guessed it, the build was fractured into like 50 different segments in the stored section. Felt totally defeated. All that work, so many hours just gone.

And of course nothing snaps back together. I might as well start over it’s so segmented.

What tips do you have? Blueprint everything? Or just don’t ever move your camp so you don’t have to deal with blueprints?

I’m guessing things segment more if you didn’t snap the pieces into place when you built it?

I haven’t watched any YouTube videos on building settlements yet—before I go down that rabbit hole, does anyone have suggestions on good youtubers?

Any other advice?

For whatever reason the idea of meeting a stranger online to trade an imaginary thing sets off my nerves.

Anybody else feel this way before trading for the first time?

I know I have read there’s a way to request to buy things that aren’t currently in the atomic shop from Bethesda (assuming this works on PS5 too??), but l’m also cheap and don’t mind waiting for things to show up on sale.

Are there any existing apps/sites where you can choose a specific atomic shop item and be notified when it shows up in the atomic shop? Or when it’s on sale?

I think I figured out a way to automate this but I didn’t want to go through the effort if it already existed.

Edit: If this doesn’t exist, is it something you’d be interested in using?

I’m looking for a darker floor type that would match the enclave wall set that I got recently. I don’t have fo 1st.

I’m trying to make a multi-level, spaceship-looking base, so ideally the bottom side of the floor wouldn’t look like wood but if necessary that’s fine.

I’ve been using the vault floors because they look somewhat spaceship-like but they’re just way too bright and don’t go well with the dark enclave metal, especially for the flat roof of my spaceship base.

Are there any floor styles that would work well?

Cosmology predicts things like how long after the big bang protons formed, when atoms formed, etc. A couple questions for anyone who feels generous.

How are these things calculated exactly?

I’m also curious how time is even measured in the early universe; if relativity plays any role in our estimates of time. “X happened, t number of seconds after the big bang.” Does this assume that there is some measure of time that is not relativistic but constant?
