5.5 month old fighting sleep training

We have been attempting sleep training (Ferber method, currently doing 3-3-3) for about a month with our now 5.5 month old with minimal success. He is roughly on a 2/2.25/2.25/2.5 schedule during the day with first nap typically 30- 45 min, second one extends to 1.5-2 with contact napping, third nap is 30-45 minutes. This is with the caveat that literally anytime we are in the car, he fall asleep within 2 minutes even if he just slept for an hour and has only been awake for an hour. Bedtime is between 7-7:30 and day wake up is typically between 6:30-7:30 but he is still screaming every night and will only fall asleep when we are in there doing check ins. We started with Ferber, took about a week but he was putting himself to sleep in less than 5 minutes but continued with 2-3 overnight feeds and occasionally an extra wake up in between. Then it slowly started getting worse and he was screaming for 30+ minutes again so we attempted to reset and go back to rocking to sleep and nights were even worse. Switched to 3-3-3 method of 3 min crying, 3 min crib side, 3 min rocking and he still will only fall asleep when we are in the room. No improvement in overnight wakes. He learned to roll during this time but still just screams with minimal attempts to self soothe. What other methods can we try?
